Description
Trying to get back into drawing ink/watercolor stuff more often, cause it isn't that I don't draw and do art I just don't post it, or don't feel like posting it. I drew this for a friend of mine, though she doesn't know it yet. This is Daler Rowney FW ink on Hotpress watercolor paper.

This is so incredibly beautiful. You've done such a great job mixing intricate line work and textures with clean patches where the eye can rest. I've seen the color version too, but I prefer this one for it's simplicity and cleanliness. Really wonderful work.

It is always a bit of a risk, painting them, whether they will turn out. That is part of why I scan them in between 'just in case'. I rarely just do things as 'just ink' though I do on occasion. I have been thinking of doing more things as just ink but it is a different sort of process than inking with the thought of doing color after . . . and inevitably the question arises of whether I am going to do color anyway.
Thanks for the kind words!

Well, I make sure there is no pencil left after I ink something, or as best as I can, there is probably a little graphite left, watercolor paper can be a bit finicky, depending on the brand. Then I scan it (check to make sure the scanner is clean, no dust or eraser bits on the scan bed!), usually in parts since my pieces tend to be too large to fit on the scan bed. Then I piece it together, if something is blurred and doesn't look good I scan it again, sometimes several times until it works. Once that is done I use levels/brightness contrast/gradient map or whatever adjustment I like best in photoshop to clean up any lingering color differences. I will also spot check for little bits of dirt though I don't generally do a lot of that. Scanning black and white is pretty easy, it is scanning the color stuff that can be problematic.

Alright, thanks a lot! :3
And if you don't mind-
What kind of pens do you use?

I use dip pens (crow quill) in various sizes with the smallest nibs (drawing nibs preferably). Inking with crow quill takes a lot of practice and can be pretty finicky but it does get you a super black line, especially with the types of inks you need to use. Hope that helps!

You just gained even more respect from me. xD
That's amazing! Sadly I don't think I'm patient or confident enough to try using those.
But hey, maybe in the future!
Thanks for all the help. :3
(I gave you a watch by the way, can't wait to see more fantastic work from you!)

They really aren't that bad, it just takes practice but that is the same with anything. There is a certain amount of risk in smudging but that is more with a lack of patience and dragging your hand through the wet ink than anything else. I would get some and practice, they aren't really very expensive.

How much DO they cost? o:

You'd have to go to wherever you purchase art supplies to find out. Usually you can buy nibs/nib holders individually (IE you don't have to get a set if you don't want/need it) but since you don't live where I live the cost probably won't be the same.

Hmm, how much did you pay for yours. I'll have to check that out one of the times I go into town. c;

Probably more than you would have to? Your profile says you live in the states, I live in Canada, everything is more expensive here, my estimation of prices is really not going to be reflective of what you might have to pay. I would look it up on the internet or call your local store, they will probably be able to tell you better than I could.

I really like how the girl and dragon are similar-- the scroll and its body, her dress and the scales, her hair and its whiskery thingies. Haha. Nice work!

Great detail! I also love the vertical composition of it. It really makes your eyes move up and down and makes one pay attention to all the detail throughout.
Amazing job!
