I'm actually more convinced that Kither will stay where he is, unconcerned. He cannot use fire nor any other attack, he can't bite; he's not this girl who is ready to sacrifice herself just to let the baby live (where's the baaaaby, argh). But it depends on what he is, and as his personality wasn't explained or hinted, it's difficult to guess.

In my opinion only mothers can really go very far when it comes to their children, it's an instinct. The males, in comparison, are less concerned despite still being able to love the children.

Technically it depends on the species whether the mother or father does protection work, and also since the dragons are sentient here remorse might make the male want to do something - but then again you did say 'in your opinion' and I accept your opinion.
