Description
The bell wakes me up but I don’t move an inch. After everyone leaves, the professor walks over to me and pets my head. “Sorry about that…. I sort of got lost in the moment…. Your blood is so….”“How old are you?” I ask him.
“In what retrospect?” he replies.
“Back when you were alive.”
“Oh. Twenty-three.” He was only one year older that me? And since we died in the same year….
“How many times have you done this presentation?”
“Only once.”
“Why did you choose me?”
“Wh-why are you asking so many questions??”
We both go silent. I want to know the answer to the question I want to ask, but I don’t actually want to ask the question….
When I reach for my stuff so I can leave, I accidentally scrape my hand with my pencil. “Shit that hurt….” When I look back at him, I see his eyes flicker and his pupils contract. “Are you-?” Before I can get another word out of my mouth, he tackles me to the ground.
“Your blood- it’s so- tastyyyyy!!!” He yanks at my hood and snaps his jaws onto my neck.
“What the hell?! Snap out of it!” I struggle to pull him off of me.
“More, more, more!” He lets out a spine tingling cackle.
“Let...me….GO!” I kick him off of me and he hits a couple desks. I think he’s knocked out…. I put my hand against my neck as I catch my breath. Was it the pencil? Did the smell of my blood trigger his vampire instincts? But plenty of students have bled in his class and he never acted like this. I don’t even know anymore…. I’m so dizzy….
When I wake up, I find myself in a dorm room decorated with school banners and flags along with posters of movies by the famous director Hayao Miyazaki: Spirited Away, Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, The Wind Rises…. I’ll admit, they have a good taste in movies.
My ears slowly come back into commision and I hear the sound of fingers against a keyboard. When I turn to the noise, I see the professor working away and grading papers. Now I remember. He attacked me. I want to know the reasoning, but I think it might be rude to ask him something like that…. I attempt to adjust myself on the bed and the springs inside of the mattress squeak. His head quickly turns to me and he rushes to my aid.
“Please don’t strain yourself,” he urges. “I took a lot of blood from you when I went awol. I’m so sorry! I tried to stop myself but-!” I put my hand over his mouth.
“It’s cool. Everyone has that one thing that sets them off. In my sophomore year of high school someone made fun of my dad and I punched them square in the face so hard they needed to be rushed to the hospital asap to get broken nose surgery. I try to keep my temper under control but Geoffery exists….”
He sits down next to me and holds my hand. “....you’re probably wondering why I went awol, right? Well, one thing I forgot to mention is that when a vampire smells blood, they go ballistic. They won’t stop until they have their fill. It’s a good thing you knocked me out before I drained you…. We usually take pills to keep our instincts under control, but some comedian decided to steal them. The problem is, I don't know who it was. I assume the medicine I took before I went to bed last night expired right after the presentation or sometime afterwards.”
“Oh. What about my wound? Is it still there?” I touch my jacket and press down, feeling the holes in my neck. It hurts when I touch it.
“You'll need to see the nurse for that. I can't take care of it until I get my meds back or I'll just make it worse. I should have said that it's a great taboo to suck someone else's blood deliberately when you've already proposed to someone….”
Does...does that mean…? “You've….proposed to...someone…?” I ask, my voice cracking severely.
“Well, no, but it's not a taboo if you're not in control of yourself. It's basically cheating on your fiancé.”
“That's terrible. What kind of assbag-?”
“Wildfire, please don't use that language.”
“Er- what kind of jerk would cheat on their girlfriend or boyfriend or whatever?”
He lets out a sigh and looks into my eyes. A sincere twinkle gleams in his pupils as he states, “This world is far from perfect, and the people that live in it even more so. There are people in the world who are just bad people and they’re the scum of the earth. They're the kind of people who think the world revolves around them.” His eyes soften a little as he smiles and continues, “You're not one of those people.”
My heart stops in its tracks. That's really nice of him to say. But I've had my fair share of low blows. “Dude. I used to steal and beat people up. I'm one of those people.”
He puts his finger on my lips and grins, his fangs showing. “Used to. You've changed. Even if I don't know what you were like in the past, I can tell you've changed.” My vision becomes blurry and I blink a few times then hold my head. It hurts like hell. “Oh! You still need to go to the nurse’s office! Here, let me take you there!” He picks me up bridal style and heads towards the nurse’s office while I close my eyes and let myself bleed out.
