Description
You and Midnight have been going to the same school for about four years since you both picked the same university, but you guys haven’t actually said a word to each other. Today, though, you come in contact with her in a way that’s quite...unexpected….The bell is about to ring for your next class, but the hallway is crowded, so you quickly dive through the gaps in between people in an effort to make it to class on time. In the process, though, you step on someone’s heel and hear a loud thump. You stop to see who you tripped, and to your dismay, you realize you just made Midnight eat the tile below you. She turns around and gives you a sharp glare that sends chills down your spine, but when she gets a better look at you, her expression softens.
“I’m so sorry! I was in a hurry- a-and the bell was about to ring-!” Right as you say that, the bell rings loudly and makes your brain rattle within your skull as everyone files into their classrooms and empties the hallway. It’s just you two now. You hold out a hand and offer to help her up, but before you can open your mouth, she springs to her feet, her face slightly red.
“Uh, it’s fine, I guess. Just...don’t do it again. Didn’t your mother teach you to look where you're going?” she states as she crosses her arms.
“She...might’ve said something like that,” you reply while tugging on your collar.
“Well, whatever. What’s in the past is in the past. Um-I’m Midnight, and don’t forget it.” She’s the one girl that needs no introduction, since everyone’s all too familiar with her haunting aura and terrifying temper. You’ve heard rumors about her knifing people and selling drugs, but you never really believed those. Actually, it’s more like you didn’t want to believe them, since she struck a chord in your heart when you first saw her your freshman year. “Are you just gonna stand there, or…? I mean, class just started, and you seemed anxious about getting there on time, so….”
“Oh-! I-it’s fine…. It’s not like getting there any earlier is going to erase my tardy. Um-are you doing anything after school?” you ask sheepishly.
“Wh-why?”
“Well, I was wondering if maybe you wanted to come over to my place for dinner or something for...as an apology for tripping you earlier.”
“You’re such a dork, I told you we’re cool on that subject. But, I can’t pass up an opportunity to get free food in my belly. The only plans I had were to sleep, but I’ll skip my evening nap just this once.”
“S-so you’re coming? Great! Uh, what would you like? I can cook anything you want-!”
“Hey, man, don’t stress yourself,” she assures you. “Why don’t you just get me some McDonalds or something like that? Something easy to grab.”
“I...guess that’s alright….” You never really picked up fast food that often, but you would do pretty much anything to impress Midnight. Even though the popular girls call her a loser, she’s easily the coolest person in the school, and a friend of the cool person is a cool person himself. That’s how you think it goes, at least.
“Alright, but listen up.” She stamps her foot on the ground and makes you jump slightly. Then, she gets close to your face and looks you in the eye. “I’ll be waiting by the doors as soon as I grab my stuff from my locker. Don’t make me wait, you hear?”
“Y-yes ma’am….”
“That’s what I like to hear! I’ll see you later, chump.” As she walks away, you feel your face burn up. Did she see you blush? You hope she didn’t. But, chump…. Nobody’s ever really given you a nickname before. Chump isn’t usually a nice name, but the way she said it gave it a warmer, friendlier meaning.
After school, you quickly collect your things and head towards the doors. After a few minutes of waiting, Midnight catches up to you, and she leans on the wall. “Nice to see you hustled over here. I hate waiting,” she says without even looking at you. You explain to her you’ll be more than happy to walk her to your dorm. “Oh, what a gentleman. Your mother taught you well. Lead the way.”
Your dorm is about the size of a normal apartment, but you don’t share it with anyone, so you have plenty of room to move around. Midnight makes an immediate beeline to your couch and hops on it, making herself more than at home. “Nice place,” she shouts as she slides onto her back and crosses her legs. You let out a sigh and pull out your phone so you can call the nearest pizza place. Then, she sits up in order to give you room to sit on the couch, and you sit close to her.
“Um, dinner will be here in about ten minutes,” you tell her.
“Good! I’m starving!” she growls as she leans on your shoulder. She looks tired. You assume she’s had a long day at school. Maybe it’s because she’s so used to her evening nap. Or maybe it’s because she’s constantly being bombarded by insults and fight invitations. Everyone knows she’s the toughest in the school, but she always rejects fight invitations because she says they’re not worth her time. Is...is she sleeping? Her sleeping face is...really cute….
The doorbell wakes up Midnight, and she looks at you as her face gradually turns red. Then, she jumps off of the couch and forms a generic karate pose. “Wh-why were you looking at me like that?” she asks, her voice trembling slightly.
“I-uh-I-uh-th-the pizza’s here, uh…. I-I’ll go get it!” you stutter as you head to the door. You get the pizza and pay the delivery guy, then head back to Midnight, who’s relaxed on the couch once again. “Um, I hope you like pepperoni.”
“Yeah, man, I love pepperoni! You got any plates?” she asks. You grab two plates and give one to her, then you guys start eating your dinner. “We should watch something while we eat. Have you heard of the movie Coraline? I absolutely love Tim Burton-esque movies.”
You both begin to talk about movies as you watch Coraline and eat pizza. During the movie, Midnight asks for a drink and she chugs the can of root beer you give her in under a minute then crushes it against her head. She also picks the pepperoni off of her pizza, even though she said she loves pepperoni. She tells you it’s because she likes to save the pepperoni for last.
After the movie, she stretches out and leans on your shoulder once more. “That was nice. I haven’t seen that movie for a while. I...actually really enjoyed spending time with you tonight,” she confesses as she begins to turn red again. Then, she closes her eyes.
“Ah, y-yeah, it was nice hanging out with you, too. There are a lot of rumors about you being a bad person, but you seem really nice.” At the mention of rumors, her eyes widen, but when you talk about her being kind, her eyes shut again.
“They’re just jealous because I’m super cool and they’re super annoying.” You both share a laugh, then she looks up at you. “Have you ever, like, well, never mind.”
“Hey, you can’t change your mind mid-sentence!” you pout.
“Haha, well, alright. Have you ever had a girlfriend before? Or at least kissed a girl?”
The only girl you’ve ever kissed is your mother, and even then, it was a rare occasion. You assume she isn’t referring to your mom, though. “No, I haven’t. What about you? Uh-not to pry, or anything.”
“Nah, I’ve had a few crushes, but I always scare them away on accident.” When she says that, you hear emotion in her voice, as though she feels broken inside. Then, you do something you immediately regret- you wrap your arms around her and pull her into a tight embrace. You shut your eyes in fear of her punching your face, but the punch doesn't come. “You have...no idea how long it’s been since someone’s held me like this….”
“I-I’m so sorry I-” you stutter as you begin to recoil.
“No, please,” she begs as she grabs your sleeve. “J-just a little longer….” Your face glows, but you let her head rest against your chest. You two say like this for a while, and though the scent of pizza isn’t exactly romantic, the look on her face makes up for it. You’ve seen the most intimidating person in the school glow like a firefly. She’s absolutely beautiful, and you wish she were yours. You’re scared, though. You’re scared that she won’t feel the same. You’re afraid of being friend zoned and heartbroken. She didn’t know who you were until just this afternoon, so why would she-
“Y’know,” she interrupts as though she’s reading your mind. “I’ve known who you are for a while, but…. I-I didn’t want to approach you. It’s just, I dunno, you’re sorta cute, and….”
Confidence boils up in you like a volcano, and you reply, “You don’t need to continue. I...think I get what you’re saying. I think….I think we both feel something for each other, a-and-” You don’t get to finish your thought. Midnight decides to silence you...with her lips. Both of your faces are completely red, but after a few seconds, you both embrace each other as you hold the back of her head and she combs her fingers through your hair.
After about two minutes, you both finally part, your faces still quite red. “Uh-um-I’m-uh-th-that was my first k...kiss….” Midnight admits nervously. It takes you both a second to realize you’re on top of her, and you begin contemplating whether or not you should get up. She tugs at your collar and you develop a lump in your throat which renders you mute. “Uhm...uh…. Do you like...wanna….” The lump get even bigger as sweat gathers on your forehead. “Wait-I-I didn’t mean-! I-I was just-! D-do you wanna go out with me or not, chump! Make up your mind before I give you a bloody nose!”
Her violent remark catches you off-guard and you quickly answer, “Yes, I wanna go out with you!”
She lets go of your collar and mutters, “....r-really…?”
“Yes, really,” you sigh. “I don’t see you as a violent person, but I do see you as trustworthy. I heard the sadness in your voice when you talked about your crushes…. You aren’t really the emotionless soldier you tell everyone you are, are you?” First, it’s silence. Then, one by one, tears start trickling down her face, until she begins full-on sobbing and you embrace her once more. All of the emotions she’s been hiding from everyone finally spill out onto your shirt.
“H-how...how did you...f-figure out….in one night……?” she asks between sobs and sniffles.
“I saw you for who you really were and not for what the rumors said you were,” you say soothingly. And for the first time, you see a genuine smile curve upon her lips as sticky tears glimmer on her cheeks. You decide to continue. “You’re an amazing person, and I feel genuinely sorry for the poor suckers who don’t get to see the real you.”
“Y-you’re making me blush,” she mutters as she giggles slightly and wipes her eyes. This night went really well. You got yourself a girlfriend and helped said girlfriend with her emotional issues. “Hey, I haven’t gotten a chance to ask you, but what’s your name?”
“My name? Well, my name is….”
