For the most part yes, you do have to pay for them ;c
BUT, there is some super good news!
you can get one for free if you're willing to put in a bit of effort, and can save up "coins" in the jolle group by drawing or writing about jolleraptors! :3
And if you save up enough coins you can totally get your own MYO slot <3 otherwise the group does raffles sometimes, so don't give up!

They're basically currency in the jolle group! you get them for submitting art or writing into the coinwork folder in the JR group :3
The journal I linked has all the details, but it's a totally free way to work toward a MYO jolle of your own <3

It currently takes 300 coins for a MYO jolle, which might sound intimidating but it all adds up >w<
There's a few bonus ways to get extra coins like the summer contest and the monthly art challenge,
but these are the coins you can earn otherwise! owo
- Drawings (Traditional or Digital)
Jolleraptor owned by you: 1 Coin (per jolle)
Jolleraptor owned by another: 2 Coins (per jolle)
Jolleraptor Couple Bonus: +2 Coins (jolles must be clearly interacting to qualify)
Background Art Bonus: +1-4 Coins (depending on complexity)
Small Animation Bonus: +2 Coins (ex: eyebrow waggle, blinking)
Large Animation Bonus: +4-6 Coins (ex: extended movement & actions) - Writing (Stories)
500 Words: 1 Coin
1500 Words: 3 Coins
2500+ Words: 5 Coins
A bonus +1 Coin if the story involves multiple jolles. - Plushies, Sculptures & Games (Crafts)
