But there was no time for a story as a rather high tone voice slid across the field, shortly both lieutenants have stood up aside. Shortly the troops were lining up to greet the unknown visitor. As everyone lined-up with the field troops having their rifles to bear and cavalry troops holding to their griffins and pikes. Soon a green painted scruffy civilian estate car approached them rattling over. As it stopped an old Magpie walked out with a walking stick and a broad smile. He was dressed in a white morning coat and a black top hat, the coat was decorated with a touch of brass strings and some black silk from the little training Tails received he recognised him as a colonel.
"Great" He thought observing the situation "Wonder what sort of soap soft he will be given to us now..." he thought as he was now somewhat distracted from the events prior.
-Well done everyone, we done indeed…, "The bird mobians walked forward still grinning brighter than a dazzling lamp" this is how we show a first class counter, I must admit sir Pineworth, "he addressed the cavalry lieutenant" it was the most fortunate that you were carrying out training in those grounds. If it weren’t for you they would’ve escaped with all the supplies that would’ve been used for their mischievous efforts, but I am glad to say that not only you have avoided the great bloodshed, but have prevented it for many others. Excellent defence on your behalf as well, sir Marshworth, you and your fine folk deserve quite a fair bit of respect. All of you should be immensely proud, double rations for all plus a fair bit of honour. Respect to all of you from me and the empire..
-Proud ourselves “echoed slightly”
-Right, I am still most satisfied with the defence and therefore it hath came to my attention that it would be only fair that I promote the Fair lieutenant Boris Marshworth to the rank of the captain, I know it was largely on behalf of your folk but it would be a fine opportunity how roughly old are you?
-Well... "he said brushing his greying bangs" I will be fifty three in about three months...
-And it would be only fair to assume that everyone I behind you will receive the plenty of honour by then, this will greatly hinder the terror operations in this county. I am also pleased to inform you that the piracy activity has also been successfully hindered at sea, never mind the 3 months we will be sorted in 3 weeks at this rate!!!
Soon both platoons rejoiced at the sight and smell of victory so near, as the air buzzed with small talk and Tails indeed felled slightly more relieved, to know that somehow he aided to avoid further turmoil was comforting. He was soon engaged with all sorts of chatter with the crew, Mainly they were just exchanging names and places of origin. After being bombarded with many names and places he knew nothing about (with exception of hearing Kohleburg mentioned a couple of times). The nature of the conversation was expected since it was his first day in the platoon, then a familiar face of a crow showed up...
-So what was your name again?
-Black, Pint Black the crow. "He performed a heavily exaugurated salute and bowed slightly" At your service!
-Charmed... "he smiled at the Crows apparent positivity" What are you doing in the army, you’re like 40 aren't you... "he asked in a sarcastic tone as he tuned into the pleasant mood with all memories of the bayonet charge faded out of his young mind"
-Ohh really? "he laughed audibly" and you should still be in school as far as I know...
They have shared a good laugh a they have walked to a side where they have carried on with their conversation...
-Me myself I am from Malsk-but I do have a lot of family members living in Highland, hence the name but still my heart is in Novozemelie.
-Nice, "Tails replied as he tired to memorize as many places in his head as he could" As for me it is a bit complicated...
-Are you by the chance from up North, fresh from fighting? "he said with a wink" And by that I don't mean Hauwee you know...
-What? "Tails quickly recognised the hint"
-I do not know how to put it otherwise…, since you don't sound like anyone from the Mruss Empire and you do somewhat remind me of a bloke from north I read in the papers once. I don't think there are that many people who have two tails "He said pointing at the twin appendages sticking out from the bottom of the olive overcoat."
-Really…?
-Sure, I think your name was Piles? Piles eh…, Growler wasn’t it?
-It’s Miles Tails Prower, and yes it is “he said shyly” it is nice that you know about it, I haven't seen anyone else recognising me...
-Pleasure to meet you sir! “he said, once again doing a sarcastic Mruss salute as he stomped the snow in a bounce and when it came to the actual salute he pulled his helmet so that it covered his eyes entirely, it was hilarious”
-I am no more honourable than you are..., "he saluted back, this time properly"
-Ok, but it’s nice seeing you in ranks, I though you would’ve been on a plane not in the trenches “the crow puzzled”
-Yeah, but whatever, either way I am proud to aid in one way or another, speaking of it, it appears barely anyone heard of the Eggman struggle?
-No, "he paused" we BEAT HIS OBESE A%$£ "he said proudly much to Tails's surprise." Once he had a clash with our warships he was never seen again! We have the finest navy in the world you know, we have more battleships than any other nation.
-Battleships? "Tails asked somewhat sceptically this time mildly surprising the crow as he gave it a quick thought-he can't possibly mean it in the traditional sense..." You mean 200meter long iron ships with high calibre guns?
-Ehh…, "he scratched his chin" I honestly don't know how much a meter is but If you mean 600-800ft then yes... Steam powered ships about that big with six or eight sixteen inch guns and some
-"Tails's engineering mindset immediately kicked into high gear as he analysed how a ship of this type would handle a swarm of badniks-which are similar to planes..." Aren't they kind of slow and weak to planes?
-Well..., from what I heard you have been a biplane pilot so I think you might be biased. "Tails scoffed hearing this" And that is exactly what he must have been thinking because it was a wipe-out. Speaking of planes-from what I know you would be bitterly disappointed if you have ever flown one…, to be honest you are better off in the field.
-I have seen one of the pilots, I think Alexander his name was…, he had a grey coat, I also saw some “sea captains”…
-Yes, here we have it like this: infantry, cavalry, tank and artillery people get to wear olive green, it used to be white, but it proved to be ineffective as white was standing out too much most of time. The navy people always wore black, and aviation used to be in blue but now its grey…
-Hey are you going to attend me performing there? “someone squeaked from the side interrupting the conversation”
-Ohh, that’s Ginger, “he said while turning his head toward the ginger cat” Afternoon Ginger, are singing again?
-Yup, it’s the “Black and White Flag” and “Rise Dear Unbounded”, one of the riders brought music prints so we thought that it would be rather nice to have a show again, are you playing the violin, we have managed to find one from the loot.
-Oh sure, sure…, come along Fails, you will enjoy it!
-Of get out of here “he laughed” it’s Tails
-When I was your age friends used to call me Mr Sleek… he laughed as he walked off.
The small celebration soon took off, it was a local tradition there to celebrate a battle with no losses, and considering the overall mood at the time it was fine by everyone, cider was flowing steadily as the mean and women sat in on the ground while the few were performing on top of a storage dug-out.
“Rise Dear Unbounded, pickup thou faithful creed, for thine we shall proceed, for our rights and deeds. Thou thy upon the maiden seas, the storms are flowing by quite near, along the ripples on the earth eaaavear so closer by…; so rise thou unbounded, who are unbounded yet…”
The sound of flutes and violin have filled the air so lovely and every one cheered along with the song. As the song spread everyone has rocketed “HURRAH, HURAAH…, To our young reign hurrah!” As Tails was slightly fascinated, never before he felt such a level of joy and pride in the air, never before he was surrounded with so much bravado, and being a cog in this was uplifting. The three commanders also sat relatively nearby as he could just hear them exchange congratulations.
-So what do you think, how long will it take now to sweep off the mess from our hills now
-With the attitude that we see on our grounds along with the attitude we se here, I am sure we wouldn’t have a single soldier left-all officers!
-So you do guess we will manage in three months?
-Three months?! "The cavalry lieutenant joked whilst grinning warmly at his comrades" Let my folk charge onto them suckers running off the hills to the shores, with backing we will be done in less than three DAYS and return home in time for dinner.
-Then we can carry on as we did before the whole republican conundrum can you imagine the world class respect we will get from this sweeping win?
-It will be as glorious as it was and as it should’ve been, shortly we’ll see…
The celebrations soon ended as everyone ate and the songs were done. The cavalry squad soon left them out of sight and everyone was back to their typical duties, Tails was chilling in the snow next to a box of mortars that have been dragged out from the enemy camp when he got approached by Captain Marshworth and Mr Sleek.
-Greetings, captain-sir! (tails stood up)
-At ease, I had some discussions with Pint here in regards to your background and what have I decided is to assign you to special duties of equipment management, basically keep our tractor and the rest of equipment in good shape, less digging and woodcutting for you.
-Thanks sir!
-He told me you are good with this sort of stuff” he said cheerfully” therefore we would like you to start tomorrow, sorry but the light is broken in the tractor headlamp and the only capable bloke is currently in recovery.
-And also, “Pint “Sleek” Black cut in” take this violin back to the captured, you should find them by the woodcutters camp...
Tails obediently followed to the woodcutters where he found a group of Captive sitting near a piling of logs with two people guarding the place with one machinegun, although from what it seemed there was little resistance.
The actual "resistance" had an appearance of an old dog with people in either no clothes, semi civil clothes, or what seems to be regular uniforms with the emblems torn off, everyone was at least a little injured.
Tails soon got permission and he handed the violin to one of the creatures who he hasn't seen yet who replied in a semi-thankful tone.
-Cheers Joey
-My name is Miles...
-Said someone who is clearly a Joey. Thanks for the violin but if you will try to bring up the topic of "the grand destiny that is the fair and honest alternative" like that other Joey "he pointed at one of the gunners" I will doge the rounds and this tool will be up everyones'.
-Up who's?
-No seriously, how long can YOU take this, doesn't having the same principles since the 19th century is of any annoyance to you.
-No, "tails replied not knowing the topic" I am very fine with the principles so song as the factories do not get burned down with people in there.
-Agree "he said re-adjusting himself to support his bad leg" I do see your point there..., but you will never understand, YOU are kind of person the empire wants, and not for the right reasons.
-What a weird guy..., "Tails though as he left the camp behind"
As he came back he rejoiced with his new crow mate who was more than happy to see him again
-Hello again, sit by the fire here did they loved their tool back?
-So much they nearly tooled me, what is the Joey thing?
-Joey is a slur used by some misguided people who disrespect the empire, I don't think you know..., the first Archduke Emperor was Joseph Noneworth the great. You might have heard of him, he was a manufacturing entrepreneur as well as a truly brilliant inventor for the time. At this times the two principalities have recently reclaimed their independence from Soleanna. Those were dark times when the first commonwealth fell... But the silver eagle has been pushed aside for now. However, it soon became apparent that they would once again try to regain control of the entire Island. But we would have none of that. Talks were already in motion of establishing a second commonwealth and the few factories that were established in Laketown, Malsk and Blumenberg became the ace in our sleeve. In the midst of that Joseph became a major figure in the conflict. And when he expressed his thoughts in the "Destiny Manifesto" he was eventually crowned Emperor. By 1824 we had full control of the entire Island and soon even beyond as we outproduced and outsmarted all who stood in our way. He brilliantly doged every assault whilst rapidly pacing through the industrial age with some very interesting blend of politics that balanced piety, state control and personal freedoms, revolutionary at the time and never changed since. And it is this what makes this country great, well- there were some problems... but who has a clean bill of history? Nobody does! And please don't get me started on these fancy "democracies" "He pretty much spat the word much to Tails's surprise" Or as Oliver called them: dictatorship of shopkeepers. Especially when you realise the scale of what we achieved: everyone is well fed, we have created the unified health guild, everyone has a nice dwelling for themselves: none of those communal flats... And we still manage to have a jolly good army. To which I am proud to serve my country good for what it stands for and not for what other countries want it to be! Although we're really more of a collection of countries united by the same basic idea and truth...
