Description This is the tool I made to make the base for my Count Veektor piece. A buddy of mine showed me this trick a few years ago and it really is nice when you are in a pinch for a decent looking base as part of your sculpt. The base itself is made from plaster of paris.  The red mark on the tool represents where a nail goes through from top to bottom. I was able to get a nice straight hole drilled with a drill press and small bit. The hole is just big enough for a nail to pass through, and loose enough that it spins in a circle freely. For a center pivot point I used a small chunk of 2x4 board with a hole pre-drilled to receive the nail. It needs to be perfectly straight up and down as well. I prep all surfaces with Vaseline so none of the plaster will stick to anything once it hardens.  I then mix plaster of paris and wait for it to get thick and then I slap it down around the center pivot point. I then put this tool in to place and simply turn it around in a complete circle to push the plaster around and get the base pattern to come out. It takes a few times to get the hang of it, but it's a real slick trick for making the exact size and pattern of base you want to sculpt on.

Slick trick base cutter tool, I like it. Similar idea to my handy-dandy way of cutting circles out of sheetrock for pipes, etc. only I used a piece of tie wire fixed to a nail or screw in the center, then used to draw, score or cut my holes out with. Then came along the good ol dremmel tool w/ a drill bit, lol.

I bet you gotta run that tool around real good before that plaster sets up on you, or you're in for a real fight.

I love Count Veector's little bat tie, reminds me of Lily Munster's Bat necklace. I've always wanted to recreate that either with metal or sculpted.

Thanks!
Yeah, it works pretty slick.
There's definitely a small window of working time with the plaster but it's fun once you figure that out.
Thanks for liking Count Veektors bat tie! I've already had a few requests for making just that as a bolo tie...hmmmm....might just have to do that.
Take care

great trick Randy, thanks for sharing!

Also, brilliant how you cut the Count's bust to suggest bat wings. Since I started doing busts last year, observing the cut of busts has become a bit of a pastime, and this one you've done is particularly clever

You bet Dug!
Thanks for noticing that with the hint of bat wing on the bust.
It's kind of a tough call as to where to make the call on busts for me sometimes but
this one seemed to work itself out. Not sure if you saw what this guy started out as but you can see it took some 'subtle' changes from my original piece...ha ha!
Thanks again!
Take care

Haha! Subtle! Great to see the progression, and I think the progression was worth it as I love where you ended up

Thanks Dug!
Yeah, it didn't feel right until that very last one.
The first one was fun but after it got trashed in my studio, I just wasn't feeling it so I tried
the creepy dude. Then at one point it just didn't do anything for me and then this more Pixarish Villian was right up my alley.

"trashed in my studio"...what happened!?!?

RandyHand In reply to DugStanat [2014-11-05 22:55:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it was sitting on my floor and it ended up collecting a bunch of dust and a few things bumped in to it and
fell on it. My main concern was getting it photographed so I could enter it in Spectrum that year.
This will actually be easier and cheaper to mould, the way it is now.

ahhhh....there is something I find mildly revolting about dusty modeling clay...kind of a visual version of nails on the chalkboard for me. Anyway, it turned out for the best
