Description
My latest work in progress...There's going to be a whole story with the characters in this piece when it's colored and complete...tba
This piece measures approx 13 1/2 inches long and about the same in height...
It's about 3 inches thick at the highest point...
I've got a cool way that I'll be mounting the piece that I'll post when it's colored etc...
Just wanted to post a work in progress....
I still have a few hours left of sculpting and refining...
Hope you enjoy
Ps.This is the first time I've ever used Castilene so I was a little nervous about working with it...
I think it's my new favorite sculpting material...
I had this stuff sitting around for a few years and didn't break it out till this piece..

castaline is awsome stuff to work with. you can really get a lot of clean detail in it. some people get frustrated with it because it takes what seems like forever to build up the form, but the payoff comes in the detail stage.
looks beautiful. I like his eyes.

Thanks so much!
Yeah, I'm the same with castilene...It has such a wonderful pliability when it's warmed up and it details so well, like you said.
I started keeping a heat lamp on a block of it and that seems to take away that time to build up the form.
Definitely keeps my fingers from aching so much...
Saw that you were in San Fransisco...
My wife and I have done the Sausalito Art Fest for 7 years now...
Do you ever make it up there?
We love it out your way and have many friends out there...
Thanks again for the watch and for the comments on Fish Rider...
Take care

So cool! I love the way you do fish, and that rider is just so wonderfully bizarre. I am definitely looking forward to seeing more of this piece. It is excellent so far.

Thank you so much!
I really do have the most fun doing fish.
The little rider is actually changing quite a bit, but for the better...
I changed it's posture, and a few other things, but it's reading a lot better now I think...
I'm going to try to wrap it up this weekend...
Can't wait for you to see it finished...
Thanks again,
Take care

Thank you so much!
Whenever I post two pix of the same piece, I should just clip and paste the same info, so that's my fault...
Thanks again for liking my work!

This is great! I love the detail in the buckles and the bridle, etc. What sort of armature is this mounted on?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
RandyHand In reply to JoelKrecklow [2008-04-29 01:12:24 +0000 UTC]
Thanks Joel!
I'm having a lot of fun with this.
This is actually just a relief, so it's only 3 inches deep.
I used some aluminum foil for the bulk of the fish body but the rest is Castilene. It's hard enough to be able to make limbs etc. so not much of an armature is required. I could have gone without the aluminum foil and used all Castilene if I wanted to, but it keeps it nice and light for this piece...
Hope all has been great with you!
Take care,
Randy

Wow, that is looking amazing Randy!! Love the design of this piece. I really like all the harness details and such. Can't wait to see this one finished and painted up. I'm intrigued to see how you're going to mount it.
Always wanted to have a go at a relief sculpture but just never had any ideas for one. After seeing this though I'm really inspired to try and come up with something.
That Casteline is pretty niffty stuff, eh
Again, great work!
All the best.

Thanks so much Jamie!
I'm really looking forward to getting this piece colored too.
I'm having a blast with this piece.
This is the first time I've tried to stick really close to a sketch that I've worked out.
Normally I get an idea and just start smearing clay or wax, but this time I thought I'd try to have the concept down on paper and try to nail that image.
I really do like that Casteline...
It's got a minty kind of smell so even better! Lol...
Again, great to hear from you my friend!
Take care,
Randy
