Description
This is Task 2 for Round 8 of OC-training Body Type:The premis was to draw your character in their underwear to show off anatomy, build and any scars or tattoos.
And because I can't draw anything without a little story behind it
Shuu-Lin recently joined Amber Hunt's staff as a maid so she needs a uniform as she can't just wear her kimono. Cue being measured up at a tailor.
"Arms out, please dearie. This isn't like your kimono. Real clothes need to be fitted and measured".
Yes, casual racism is alive and kicking in Kitholme.
As an Azullian (oriental) Shuu is smaller than the average western height at 5'2" (157cm).
There are three sub-races of Azullians, the Ilkhanate, Shenzou and of course the Azullians themselves, all generally refered to by outsiders as Azullians. Shuu is an actual Azullian, though a very low ranking one.
I just realised I'm supposed to do four basic expressions with this task but I've already sketched them in with the next task. So you'll have to wait for those
It seems I'm really mixing and matching the tasks here because I've included her standard undergarments here so I won't include them in the wardrobe task next.
For an Azullian girl the undergarments are in two pieces.
On her top half she wears a Han Juban, a simple rib-length short sleeved top that wraps like a kimono (usually left to right), and is tied using two ribbons called Koshi Himo. On her bottom half she wears a Susoyoke which looks like a towel with ties at each side to tighten and fasten it in place.
And lastly the bit you've been waiting for (I presume); the full explaination of my GUESS WHO entry in Task 1;
The world setting is Kitholme; a steampunk variant of the Victorian London, if London was inhabited by a mix of human and a lazy ruling class of immortal (yes really) lizardmen called the Kith. Built behind a 30' high wall, built on a plateau and surrounded by dense forest infested with dinosaurs. Yep, that really is a Pteradon circling above. And the factories belching smoke into the sky are part of the industrial revolution.
Shuu is an Azullian, an exotic people that are native to Islands a couple of weeks sail off the coast. Though Shuu herself is native to the Azullian Quarter in Kitholme. She is mourning the death of her cousin; Mae. Mae was falsely accused of being a traitor and 'Gated'; Locked out of the city among the dinosaurs... and eaten by raptors a couple of minutes later.
Mae's father/Shuu's uncle went to the kindred (half-kith) detective Amber Hunt (the redhead) to get justice as Amber is a ranking member of the House of Hann (Long Story
Which is where Shuu comes in. She turned up at Amber's house two days later with a small trunk. fav.me/dc0oxw5 As part of the family's honour debt to Amber, she is now an indentured servant (whether Amber likes it or not
Amber shares her mourning over Mae's totally unneccesary death. Especially since along with around a thousand other people crowded on the the city walls, she saw the girl's grizzly death with her own eyes. This was the scandal mentioned in the clipping, and Amber is the infamous detective. It should read Family Indebted but I ran out of space
Amber recovered the body and after Mae was exonerated, she was buried with full honours and her family given a private apology and a large sum of cash not to go running to the newspapers with the real story.
You can read the first part of the story here; fav.me/da47qh2

Shuu has a lot to deal with! Poor Mae, that is so terrible! I hope that Amber ends up being fond of her, after all, the poor girl was sent away as a payment! XD

I think we can safely say Amber comes to like Shuu (given her reaction in task 8...).
In the meantime, Amber hires a more down to earth, even lazy, maid alongside Shuu in the hopes they will rub off on each other and find a middle ground.
Amber was paid for the investigation, and the family were more than compensated when the truth came out, But the Azullians are sticklers for honour and debts like that. But there may also be political motivations; Amber is a high ranking member of the same Trading House, getting Shuu into her household is a definite step up for the family.
So perhaps Shuu is being pulled in even more directions... and maybe more than that too...

Yeah, in many ways it's a brutal world. Realistic ones often are, and I try to keep it logical, believable and realistic (despite the steampunk and dinosaurs ) The lady in the background of the guess who task is the main protagonist of my stories, and a detective of sorts so murder, deception and death aren't ever really that far away.
Yes, a big wall helps... but what happens when it's breached...

Shuu takes her responsibilities very seriously. She tries to be the perfect maid, working, in Amber's opinion, a little too hard. Amber hires another girl, Kathryn who is a little slovenly, so that the pair will hopefully rub off on one another. Giving Kethryn a bit more pride in her work and making Shuu relax a little.
In a story that's still to be written she does raise a huge fuss when something happens to Amber, showing there is definitely a true loyalty evolving.
And then there's task 8; fear...

Thank you
I must admit, I hadn't really considered her age.
Typical lifespans in Kitholme (Victorian era) run to about 45 for men and 39 for women. Wealth and access to health care can increase this, poor living conditions can decrease it. An unmarried woman of 21 is considered able to govern her own affairs. Average marital age is around 18-23 but can be as young as 12, especially among the poor where the lifespan is much shorter.
Shuu's family haven't selected a husband for her yet. The process was put on hold when she came to serve Amber. But in Azullian culture 25 is generally regarded as too old to marry. At the same time, she is still under the authority of her family so I would have to say she is 17.
Thank you for asking, it's been helpful in rounding out some details I hadn't really considered yet.

It is sad but it's also a story of growth.
Bringing Shuu into Amber's house forces Amber to grow and open up a bit more. Perhaps Shuu can learn from that.
Thank you, if you go back through the rounds you'll see other characters from here (Amber in round 2 and Danika in round 5) as the world continues to grow and evolve. And yes, who doesn't love dinosaurs
There are 8 more tasks so I think seeing more of Shuu is inevitable What other secrets if any does she hide. And what more are we (and I
) going to learn about her culture. Before this round, the Azullians were little more than a concept. I'm learning as much as everyone else

Indeed. Life can be cruel sometimes.
Justice was served in the end. But that won't bring Mae back.
Azullians have a highly developed sense of family and personal honour. Even such low ranking ones as Shuu or her uncle Cho-Yin; Mae's father.
Was it's Shuu's decision to serve, or was it something she was asked to do for the family name. Who knows.

I try to make my worlds realistic which often mean complex. Kitholme seems to grow with each piece I write and draw. I find myself learning things about the city and world that even I never imagined.
Before I started this round, the Azullians were just an outline. A pseudo-oriental culture to counterbalance the others (Danak = westerners, Merrin = Vikings/Danes and Jazai = African style tribal cultures). By the time we finish the round I expect to have the basis and history of an entire culture LOL.
Shuu is rather delicate looking but her life hasn't been all bad. She grew up as a trader's daughter and what happened to her cousin has been the only real tragedy in her life.
Thank you, I always try to put a context into this task. Look through previous rounds and you'll see everything from scientific study papers to bikini selfies

As for Shuu, well it's a bit of both.
Amber finds Shuu helpful because the girl is driven to do her very best because of the implied debt that she carries. As far as she is concerned the family's honour is at stake on every little task she does. Which is frustrating for Amber who appreciates the superb job that Shuu does but wants the girl to relax a little and have a life too.
To that end, Amber hires Kethryn, a slightly lazy maid with an eye for the men whom she previously turned down at an interview. It's Amber's hope that as the new girls they will rely on and learn from each other. Kethryn will learn from Shuu to do things properly and with pride in her work. And she will teach Shuu that it's sometimes all right to relax or goof-off and to have a life outside of her duties.

Kitholme has been evolving for almost 10 years since it's original inception as a pure fantasy world. I love how the steampunk/dinosaur version has come out myself and it's all thanks to OC-Training where I rebuilt the world from the ground up, even changing around major characters backgrounds, relationships and place in the story.
If you're in the mood for reading, this short story looks at one of the problems of living with dinosaurs as neighbours...
The Red List - A Kitholme StoryTHE RED LIST
By John Paul Dodds
I was on my way to bed when the knock at the door came.. I blinked. Not sure if I'd imagined it. It came again, more urgently. I turned and walked to the door. Who would call at this time of night? Martia appeared in the bedroom doorway in her nightgown, clutching at our teenage daughter; Askia protectively.
The knock came again, insistently this time. I yanked the door open. “Fergus!”, I half yelled in shock. “What are you doing, man”. My friend and workmate had his hand raised to knock again. His hair and clothes were unkempt, as if he too had been recently disturbed from his slumber. I would have bet on some drunken prank but for the serious, even grave expression her wore. There were three other men with him. Men I didn't recognise. At least one had the look of authority about him. The other two bore oil burning lanterns to light th

Sorry for the doubled-up link there.
I was too tired and not paying proper attention when I replied before ops
I hadn't drawn the parallels myself until you pointed them out but yes, there are certainly some similarities. Especially in that story. But in my defence, my world predates any knowledge of Attack On Titan by five years or more
The Red List was actually written as an accompaniment to the Flora and Fauna task of round two of OC Training:
Most of the stories are set firmly within the city limits, centring around Amber as a detective in a Sherlock Holmes style format. The dinosaurs and setting are pretty much just colour. Except in stories like Shuu's where they ate her cousin, Mae. You can see why Gating is such a feared punishment. Especially if you're familiar with Attack on Titan.

Ohh so the person she was mourning was her cousin wrongly accused of treason and it was Amber who solved the case! And she's Amber's maid! Really interesting, and pretty far from what I had guessed xD I must point out again (as I did the first time when I saw the background of your story) that "a steampunk variant of the Victorian London" sounds like an awesome setting!
I like the shadow behind her telling Shuu what to do, cool idea for this task I like how you explained how the items of clothing are called too!

Raqonteur In reply to HelevornArt [2018-02-14 08:59:29 +0000 UTC]
Yes, Shuu was mourning her cousin, Mae. They were close because they were a similar age and from the same extended family, and of course, trading house.
Yes, Kitholme has evolved significantly and continues to grow organically with each story and drawing. I love world-building and making everything fit together is a must. Each story or drawing explores something a little different and even I find myself learning things about the world that weren't apparent before.
The steampunk aspect is fairly new (the original setting was the standard fantasy until a re-write was needed back in round 2 due to Amber's Emo tendencies ) so that side of things hasn't really been explored properly yet. I imagine it's a bit like high-end technology these days, mostly for the rich but starting to drip slowly down into the hands of the general populace. Oh, and don't forget there's dinosaurs too
If you look back over previous rounds you'll see each body type drawing has a little story behind it so it's not simply a profile pic or a character sheet, it's part of the character's story
Amber's was the moment she arrived in her new husband's home as a bought and paid for a trophy wife, and stripped off to show he'd been conned into buying a kindred wife (He hadn't, he already knew).
Alycia was taking a selfie in her new bikini with her best friend off camera.
Anna was going through a wild child stage and went to a party dressed in nothing but a few strips of electrical tape.
Danika's was part of a scientific study paper written by Amber.
Poor Genevieve tripped over a tree, tore her dress and went to Alycia for help getting a new one.
And Aesha was being poked and prodded by scientists trying to work out how to cure (or weaponise) her powers.
And now we have Shuu, getting measured up for her new, western style maid's outfit. I chose to make the tailor a grey shadow because he's not important to the story and would simply be a distraction visually. A trick I started using in the last round with Aesha. Each one of these actually became canon moments in the character's stories even though they were literally dreamed up just for this task

That's impressive, I love that you managed to turn them into more than character sheets, and that you made up stories for the training that you really got to use in the stories - that is the very point of the training! And wow, you've taken part in a lot of rounds so far! (And Danika was being studied by Amber, that's interesting.)
Good idea to make the tailor figure a shadow, it makes more sense than to show him explicitly as if were a significant character.

That's the problem with internet research...😋
Until this round of OC-Training, the Azullian Isles have been little more than background colour. Now I'm using this opportunity to expand on them significantly. World building is a passion of mine 😊
My admittedly rushed research left me with the feeling that the Hanfu was actually a male garment.
As for the Azullians...
There are three major islands in the chain, Azul the southernmost (japan), Shenzou, the middle kingdom (china) and the Ilkhanate to the north (Mongols). Lumping the all together as Azullian is a western oversimplification. Though the Azullian are nominally dominant in all three landmasses.
The history follows our own somewhat including Tenjinn, but when his empire fell apart, the Azullian stepped into the power vacuum.
Of course this mix of cultures means the kimono could be universal as female wear (get out of jail free card 😉)
Thank you for the spot. Please keep me apprised of any other glaring errors. I'm always glad to have a more knowledgeable eye 😁
I may have to start picking your brains 😀
