Forgive me for I have sinned.

tl;dr - This kind of tutorial is not very good and I know it, yet I did it anyway. It was kind of fun though. Try it and think of it as a kind of activity like doing a crossword puzzle rather than real drawing

Pardon any spelling/grammar mistakes, the text should be more or less understandable though.

You'll need to find some good tutorials on hair linework I'm afraid, as well as shading. I cut some parts out because although I do retain full rights to this, publishing everything like that felt a bit like cheating. Check the links below for most of those helpful hints explained better than I ever would

I actually *hate* most such tutorials out there... for many reasons, depending on the subject (don't even get me started, as this is going to be long as it is). And heh...here I am doing one for a commission.

In this case I don't like "tiny shortcuts" like:
"draw the horses' leg like this" *draws a perfect horse leg*
It's like that old "draw a circle, draw the rest of the effing owl" joke.
And the reason is to draw like that you need to know about horse anatomy, or at least have some reference. You need to SEE the tendons, bones, muscles, beneath the skin and know how to mark them in your linework. I mean the artistic way of seeing stuff. If you're struggling with still life, pans, pots etc. you know what I mean.
You need to know about light and how it affects the subject - and thus your linework, you need a somewhat trained hand even to make your lines look effortless and to make clean shading. That's a titanic amount of knowledge and skill buried under that "tiny" shortcut, or silent ommission if you will. And all of this is just the linework around ready-made proportions.
Draw a leg like this...yeah, right.

As you can see this always frustrated me beyond reason. I never could do half as well as "in the picture above", and no wonder.

Now, having been on the other side of the fence I can say that the task is somewhat hopeless because there's no way to squeeze all of that into a bunch of images accompanied by some text. And...I did have fun drawing all of this. Kill me but I did, it was kinda fun. I hope it's for good purpose (project information was on the skimp side).

OK...if you've read that juvenile rant and gotten this far, here's a reward. Sharing these useful, valuable, well thought-out resources is also my pennance:

That's a set of tutorials that explain a LOT about the things I've skipped in the above guide.

And Betty Edwards' "Drawing on the right side of the brain" should explain the torment I (maybe you too?) was going through. So take a look inside that book if you haven't already (is that even possible on DA? ).

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoy this somehow.

Don't give up
You'd be amazed how many times I've failed before I drew a half-decent one. Most looked like something between a cow and a dog
Takes practice, that's all. Loads and loads of practice.

Good luck!
