I would avoid referencing anything that isn't stated to be a reference/ help- and look at pictures of actual cats (Short haired ones). Because all artists have their own style which may be off from real anatomy, my example is that I personally like to push anatomy on my cat drawings so anything that's not meant to help, simple won't help. Learn anatomy, even generalized, than style it.
That would be my biggest tip for what 'not to do'.
My other tip is that cat paws are very round.

You're better off waiting for when I do free drawings though. I'll post a journal that will request of few characters. Sometimes I'm looking for something specific though.
