Description
These are the results of me testing my waters not only in terms of creating a character design for the protagonist, but also the resolution for in game cutscenes. I really loved seeing games on the Mega/Sega CD and Turbographics which featured a small box on screen with fully 2D animate cutscenes developed by Japanese animators in the 90's. I like the idea of making traditional games, but adding some cinematic qualities to what would otherwise be character portraits and text boxes. I have to develop every part of my game from scratch in C++ and I've gotten pretty far game wise (main loop, frames per second, sprite loading/animation, world building, box collision, solid wall collision, the works). However, now begins the making of mechanics for how cutscenes will play, this should be fun. This is a rather weird character design; a bumble bee with a sniper rifle. The design was inspired by characters such as Sparkster from Rocket Knight Adventures and Crypto from Telefang; cute and cool. I have sort of a weakness for Japanese style character designs due to their simple shapes and adorable faces so I couldn't help but emulate completely. The strange part of the design comes from how gigantic the abdomen is (Bumble Bee anatomy). I dabbled in a smaller one, but the large sphere gives him a more iconic silhouette and I could have some fun with it in terms of writing (maybe I can poke fun of it with other characters).
The bolt action rifle was another fun choice, turns out I gave him a stinger after all. I was planning on making a platformer until I thought up an combat system ripped from Killer 7 and Resident Evil 4's Regenerators; aiming at small moving targets to take down an enemy while having to deal with a slow rate of fire and individual round reload. I thought of making the rifle look a little less real, but the stylized Mauser rifle seems to fit quite well. The rifle isn't his as its given to him by another character in the story. The reason why I picked a bolt action in particular is because it'sĀ my most favorite weapon design. "Sometimes a guns not just about shootin', it's about reloadin'!" Each shot you have to pull back the hammer which adds tension along with reloading each round to finish it off by dropping your arm down to push the bolt into place. It's second to the revolver in terms of cool factor, but the rifle is larger adding to his silhouette.
