I would like to think that a stage this advance would only come about if twilight was struck down.
Not so much in a shipping sense but a 'I see my Best friend on the ground bleeding, I'm going to beat you until there isn't enough meat left to squirt blood when I hit it' sense. Of course somepony is going to stop him (maybe fluttershy) and they would get struck as well snapping spike out of it before he breaks into tears at the monster he's become.
Or something.

Looks like Spike was corrupted by dark magic. I had a story where he had been, leaves and returns when he thinks he has it in control. Then one life threatening moment to his friends. Boom its back with a vengeance. No matter the outcome his friends are a little afraid of him and this enrages him more. Even if they say their not afraid he can smell it on them, a constant reminder of these white lies. This torrent of emotion fuels the darker side more, to the point it staring to devour his soul.

The words 'Blinded by rage' play a heavy role in his character. Well, his 'corrupt' character.
...but I fancy him wounding his friend(s) and 'coming back' after stopping mid-strike to a crying/afraid friend. Or "friend".
