Description Original name, eh?

Onyx and Marble

I should explain how I did this
Well we got this great chess set down in Mexico and it's just beautiful to look at. So I wanted to try and get some nice picture of it
For this picture I set up the chess board on a table in my living room. I wanted the onyx at the front because otherwise the black would blend into the background
Then I set up another small table (because I lack a tripod ) and a bunch of books to put my camera at a decent height.
Then... I grabbed a mirror and started flashing light, from the sun shining in the window, onto the chess pieces. This caused the marble peices to glow a bit (and I actually had a couple other pictures where they shined so bright that they looked like they were on fire or something )
I also added contrast using my computer, mostly because my camera is crappy and dulls most of my pictures, but it also made this picture pop more, in my opinion. I couldn't change it too much though, because like I said, the chess pieces were already glowing.
Besides that, I don't think I did anything... Turned it a bit and cropped it, but I'd say that's it. ^^

Comment:

It is quite hard to write a critique about this photo because I guess a lot of post-processing was involved and it has an overall abstract theme.
The concept is nice and a lot could be interpreted into the title alone. Therefore 3.5 stars for vision.
The originality is rated with 2 stars because the idea of taking a photo of some chess game is nothing new or especially exiting.
The technique is one of the hardest parts to judge here because no EXIF data was given and the contrast and sharpness have been increased far too much for serious judgement. The shot has the feeling of falling to the left. Please try to level a shot like this with the help of lines. Look at the edge of the chequerboard in the foreground to see what I am trying to say. Therefore you get 2.5 stars because the focus and the chosen aperture seem to be ok.

The overall impact is 3 stars (average). This shot is interesting to look at but looses a lot after a short time because of lacking details and too much post-processing involved. Also the point of view is quite boring but adds to your abstract concept.

Haha, yeah, I agree, it's not very original
Considering my skill level (very amateur) this took more work than expected You're right, I should have explained what I did. Maybe I'll do that right now....
Oh, you're right, it's crooked Thanks for pointing that out

Thanks a lot!!

Very pretty shot. The pieces are so shiny, and that really gives some artistic flair. Great job!
