Finally! Here it is, a whole image DEDICATED to 'The Edge' (hah, I make it sound as its important! )

The Edge is a sentient/talking sword that is found by Clay after being discovered in the remains of Clay's homeland. After being left alone under piles of rubble for years upon years, The Edge has developed a "bitchy" view upon the world. When Clay finally comes of age and returns to his homeland to find The Edge, the sword convinces Clay to get some good old fashioned payback on the ones that destroyed Clay's homeland.

The reason The Edge has multi-coloured jewels is because it changes depending on its mood (a'la mood ring) and when The Edge talks, it also flashes brightly, just to add some character to it. I came to this conclusion after looking at having just a big eye or a face inside the gem, magic mirror on the wall style, but I thought it might take some seriousness away from the sword, even though The Edge is extremely sarcy, you have to face the facts that it's still one sharp sword.

The runes themselves would be a gameplay mechanic, for The Edge and Clay would start off with no runes. But as you progress through the game beating baddies or discovering secrets you could upgrade The Edge by having runes etched or inscribed on the blade, resulting in new abilities/moves/powers.

Onto the image, this just something I quickly did for devART because it wouldn't fit on my presentation boards! But I modeled the sword in 3D, and managed to get it rendering to match my initial drawings, which I'm quite happy with. And for ultimate cheese, I put in the writing from 'The One Ring' from the LoTR's and also if your wondering what the elvish says it is:
