Description
New Republic A-Wing Interceptor squadron 042nd “Hellion” were dispatched to recon a border sector for a missing New Republic cruiser ”The Erudite”, when sensor scopes picked up an incoming vessel from hyperspace.Captain Bennet “Stinger” Viran ordered his squadron to make for open space upon realising a star destroyer just entered orbit near where the Erudite went missing. A panicked cry from Flight officer Danny “Wipeout” Menz drew Stingers attention back to the planet as a squadron of 9 tie interceptors leapt up from the dense cloud cover to cut off their escape.
Former imperial tie interceptor ace LT. Amiskra “Siren” Azukai realised she was in for the fight of her life when her flight computer identified the 9 interceptors as the 669th, her old squadron. Her Adrenaline flared into overdrive and she was pressed hard against her seat as she kicked her interceptor into emergency power to meet the on coming threat. A quick assessment drained the blood from her face, 7 adequate but average A-wing pilots and one tie interceptor ace versus 9 of The most lethal pilots Amiskra had ever flown, with were about to square off.
After relaying her grim calculation to Captain Viran, Siren set her shoulders and gripped the fire controls. If this was her time, Nightmare was going to buy her ticket to hell with as many of their own lives as she could take.

The dogfight was fierce and bitter, a desperate run and gun melee to escape the imperial remnant ambush. Nightmare fell on Hellion savagely, 9 aces against 7 competent but outclassed pilots, the fight would have been one sided were it not for Siren's suicidally aggressive counter offensive. She bullseyed one Interceptor, "Ensign. Cayden “Hex” Dantella" head on with all sextuple cannons blazing, before cutting out of the riposte by two incoming interceptors, opportunely taking a second "Ensign. Vallern “Damsel” Hammet" in a high aspect dive as she slotted a friendly A-wing, leaving a second burning streak falling towards the planet. Stinger's efforts to rally his squadron to retreat in a composed manner, beyond the gravity well of the planet they tangled above, proved futile. His pilots were panicking, getting isolated and cut down, he himself died attempting to draw fire off one of his newest and youngest pilots. Stinger's A-wing errupting in a fireball in full view of his remaining squadron sent them over the edge, from overwhelmed to terrified. Siren verbally wrestled their panic with her practiced steady and firm voice, seizing control of their training instincts and pulling her three remaining A-wings with her low to the planet, in a gambit to draw Nightmare into a low terrain dogfight where their superior numbers and coordination would have to contend with obstructions and a level plane of attack. Unsaid was her intention to draw nightmare in close and get them turning with her in a furball, before demanding her A-wings cut and run, reaching their superior top speed before the interceptors had a chance to catch them with their superior acceleration. Sonic booms echoed violently through the canyons and mountains as three A-wings following one interceptor twisted and weaved low and tight, green laser stitching their trajectories with every line of sight presented. Amiskra sent two A-wings, "FL O. Luka “Jinx” Tang" and "FL O Danny “Wipeout” Menz" ahead down a canyon while she and "FL O. Flade “Ragdoll” Orex" cut between ravines opposite each other to get behind the enemy ties and force them to break pursuit to defend. LT Cmdr. Aiden “Reaper” Reinhard noticed something was a miss when he crested a mountain and saw only two A-wing afterburners howling down a canyon and out of view around a bend, Before he could voice his conclusion, Siren's interceptor came screaming in low from a 90 degree aspect, green hissing just shy of Reinhard's interceptor and taking LT. Janus “Fencer” Muller's interceptor in a brilliant fireball that disintergrated the wing and ball cockpit, leaving a lone wing to spiral and bleed off energy like a ragged cloth in the wind, already far behind the supersonic ties. a moment later Ragdoll's volley struck Ensign. Kades “Razor” Pelam's interceptor, overwhelming his shield and shredding his solar paneling on one wing, causing thick black smoke to vent from his portside Ion thruster. He immediately broke high and circled to get clear as Siren and Ragdoll shot past each other's noses and began burning for distance on the now breaking interceptor formation. Ragdoll swore, hot-micing something to himself, and before Siren could object, he broke hard from his egress to pursue Razor's smoking Tie/IN. Siren cursed desperately at him, demanding he break off immediately because he was being a "Stupid suicidal nugget!" and began turning around, passing back into the sound barrier with a rattle and a boom, just in time to catch the disant glow of a fireball errupting where Ragdoll's little A-wing was trailing Razor. With a sick feeling at the pit of her stomach, she rolled her interceptor back on course to regain speed and regroup with Wipeout and Jinx.
That half turn had cost her the energy she needed to stay ahead of Reaper and Winter's ties. They'd be on her in moments, she had targeting computer lock warnings already. To her relief and dismay, two A-wings silhouetted by their drive glows rapidly came into view from the horizon. Jinx announced they were coming to help with a mixture of nervous fatalism and determination. Their arrival bought Siren a few more options against Nightmare, but she knew they wouldn't last very long in a dogfight. Deciding something to herself as she watched those two brave pilots rocketing towards her, she ordered Wipeout and Jinx to feint with a head on, and continue on their trajectory to burn for altitude. They sounded acknowledgement, obviously not catching the implied "get lost kids while you can". They shot past her in silence and her rear view glowed brilliant red and green, as both sides traded glancing bursts of energy. Twin sonic booms struck her fighter as she began a violent bank into the turn circle of Reaper's Tie Interceptor, G's pinning her back in her seat and forcing laboured, controlled breaths. She rocketed under Reinhard and just above Elsa's burst of laser, twisting out of Reaper's frighteningly quick strafe where she'd been moments before. She had a few seconds alone with these two before Smolder, Hunter and Tyrant joined them, she assumed Razor was egressing home after the damage he suffered. Amiskra was confident she could take Winter one on one, she was far less confident about taking Reaper, bleak at the prospect of having to fight Reaper and Winter at once and downright wrote herself off at facing all 5 aces. Her mind was racing for a way out of this mire. There's always a way, Amiskra had always managed to survive the odds, consistently making it through battles where her peers fell by the dozens. A wave of anger suddenly surged within her, she was better than Nightmare, maybe even better than Reinhard himself. She was the pilot he'd call when he needed somebody to make it through a dizzying furball to pull a wingman out, and she always got through and back out... not always with the wingman, but that's not her fault if other people couldn't stay alive. Being stuck in a no win situation against lesser pilots who think themselves her equal was maddening enough that she started laughing hysterically, opening a non encrypted channel as she did so. Nightmare's professional chatter was suddenly interjected by a familiar voice laughing somewhat deliriously. Everyone went silent for a few seconds as Reaper, Winter, Smolder, Tyrant and Hunter merged pursuit of the lone interceptor maintaining a precarious lead on them. Aiden broke the silence "Azu'kai..." his calm smooth voice rang out, clipped with reserved anger and authority. Her heart skipped a beat at hearing him say her name like that, which only angered her again and she snapped back venomously "Reinhard". "Your little A-wings are gone, it's just us now Lash, turn around and lets finish this." He emplored in a softer almost kindly voice, the one he used when he'd privately commend an action or give her his honest thoughts out of earshot of ranking officers. Siren snorted, "I've a better idea, why don't you let them face me one by one, and then when im done with them, you and I can have our dance Aiden" she shot back as her eyes flicked over the com console, a flashing light from her squadron channel, Wipeout was probably trying to contact her. She switched channels as Reaper started to reply, "Siren?!" Danny's voice rang out unnecessarily loud. "Break for orbit Wipeout, you too Jinx, make the jump and rendezvous with the "Clarity of Judgement", let them know the Erudite was destroyed in an Imperial ambush" Amiskra Ordered. "We aren't leaving you" Jinx announced with conviction, the kind of stupid conviction, stupid rookies have when they think something is honorable. Siren let her sudden irritation slip through her neutral tone. "Jinx, Wipeout, there's no scenario where you engage Nightmare with me and both live. Go home." she snapped, switching back to the unencrypted channel.
Amiskra's mind wandered as she broke her interceptor in a sharp bank to face the inevitable. Her little sister's smiling face the first day Ami had shore leave. She looked so beautiful standing there silhouetted by the sun on their one bedroom apartment balcony. Amiskra felt proud in her Imperial cadet's uniform, crisp black, clean and full of ambition to become a fighter pilot. Felt like the memory belonged to somebody else now. Her sister would be okay, she'd set her up on a safe world in the mid rim with enough saving to get by. "Alright cowards, have at it!" Amiskra barked, charging the formation head on. Something about the tone of her challenge warned all 5 aces not to be in front of her when she closed weapon range. She was set on going one for one, something no pilot would do unless they intended to die and spite their killer. They broke in all directions as she wildly raked 6 molten verdant streams of laser across the closest interceptor, scoring multiple glancing impacts, which immediately overloaded the shield. Chunks blistered off the solar panels, leaving angry red glow marks and she howled past to pursue another fighter, caught flat footed mid break. Reaper was on her in moments and green laser hissed past her, missing by milimeters as she hugged her interceptors max turn rate, lining up whoever she could before she violently left this galaxy. Amiskra felt strangely detached from it all as she pursued what she thought must have been Elsa's interceptor, like it was just a training simulator back on Annexer and Elsa's fighter was just a computer generated image. Winter was breathing hard over Nightmare's com channel "Get her off me!" she screamed in a rare loss of composure as another burst grazed her shield with a hiss. Reinhard was pushing his interceptor as hard as it could turn, but so was Azu'kai and Everhartt. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he noted Amiskra's choice of target ensured she'd complete a full revolution, with her target in the way of the rest of the formation, forcing them to break against Elsa's Tie and deaccelerate to merge with this quickly forming train of idiocy. He was impressed, and frustrated with the the other members of Nightmare for falling for this obvious tactic. "Break off Tyrant, Smolder, extend and come back and finish her" he snapped at them, letting the G's exhale his chest forcefully so he could inhale again. They began to do so, and then Tyrant exploded next to Reaper's interceptor, as it pulled up and away and showered it with molten durasteel. Every member of nightmare let out a curse simultaneously and began defensive postures against this new threat. Two A-wings shot over head, enveloped by vapor cones, their passage announced with a thunder crack. Reaper's interceptor rocked out of his corner airspeed turn as he fought to stabalize. A high pitched female scream was suddenly cut short by a second fireball errupting in his peripheral, announcing Amiskra had just vapourized Sub LT. Elsa Everhartt. Danny Let out a wild victory cheer as he and Luka rocketed past the melee below, his elation dampened a little by the fact he and Luka had agreed to hit two seperate targets, but had apparently been talking about the same one. "Run!" Jinx yelled on the unencrypted channel, another interceptor going up in flames below in front of Siren's Tie. Amiskra grinned widely as she flew through the debris of her former wingman, extending as fast as her interceptor could accelerate. "We'l make another high speed pass to ward them off you, then continue to break orbit." Danny announced as he and Jinx performed a high speed split S and charged the regrouping Tie's in pursuit of Siren. Amiskra's breathing picked up as a flood of emotion returned all at once, the prospect that she might survive this deadly encounter snapping her back to her senses. She jinked wildly as vengeful green laser sprayed the mountains and cliffs near her, It was going to be a near thing. Siren could see the A-wings coming back now, at speeds the interceptors couldn't match in time. At that speed the A-wings would have a time advantage in a head on too, as angry as Reaper, Smolder and Hunter must be, they won't go one for one with some nobody A-wing pilot who wants to be a hero. She was right, as she picked up enough speed to clear the valley and begin a climb, the interceptors bled energy evading two torrents of crimson "Kriff off". It was enough, Amiskra soared away through the upper atmosphere with Nightmare too far to close weapons range. A flood of relief vented the tension and energy from her body as she collapsed back in her seat and began punching in her jump coordinates, to rendezvous with their mothership "Clarity of Judgement". "Thanks for the save Hellion" She smiled. Luka and Danny were grinning like idiots, giddy at their plan having actually worked, the fact they downed an Imperial ace - even if he didn't know they were there, it still counted. They were going home, they survived. But the mood quickly sobered, 5 of their wingmates were dead, the crew of the Erudite was dead - if not for Siren, they'd have certainly died in orbit too. "We should be thanking you" Danny replied. "We'l see you at home, Siren" jinx added. "At home" Ami replied as the two friendly icons on her radar flickered into hyperspace, her own starlines forming as she flickered moments later.
