Description
Okay: so I was arguing with that hand (it really was too small, and just laying there like a dead lizard besides), and I got this.. rather.. hmmdy... distracting mental image of Balthier, standing out in the vivid early morning sunshine, enjoyably nude and very casually drinking a glass of juice. Now, I realise of course that this may not be your idea of distracting; but for me it solved several problems all at once: gives his hand something to do (hold the glass of juice) so that it doesn't lie there like a dead lizard (I like lizards, I don't want any dead ones in my art), gives Fran a reason to be hanging on his neck and whispering perhaps a suggestion for .. something.. to do later or preferably immediately.
I just Love tying up loose ends, don't you?

You are very sweet to this old drawing! I ought to use this one as a springboard for one of dA's kick-your-own-ass things sometime. I'm glad it brightened up a crappy day for you.

I am flinching my way through very old comments.. I feel bad for leaving them so long! I didn't think I got THIS distracted. You.. you think the muscle structure is awesome?? I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! It's no big mystery.. I just use a good reference pic (heee.. eye candy..!) and carefully simplify the muscle structures to work with my lineart style.

Very sexy ald well proportioned *love*
But, If I might say, the hand looks a bit strange, still, his little finger doesn't fit, it looks a bit like it's cut off at some point, because he can't possibly hold the glass and bend the finger before it... I think...
anyway, wonderful work!

razimo In reply to Laurynne [2007-06-07 02:33:07 +0000 UTC]
It's .. *holds her hands up to show you... feels slightly foolish.... resumes typing* ... it's my Lack of Foreshortening-Fu! He's holding the glass with his thumb and first two fingers, supporting its weight with his fingertips only; his ring finger and little finger are curved smoothly, the tips of them lightly resting against the glass. He's doing this because.. err.. well, this is the way that I hold a glass, and it was my hand I was photographing in the mirror for a reference pic.
Anyway.. that's what's SUPPOSED to be going on. Like I said.. lack of Foreshortening-Fu, but I'm working on using the shading to make the turn of the fingers more clear as I colour it!
Thank you very mucho for the input!

oh, so the fingers are really bent in front of the glass... then I didn't say anything, because it looks just like that I just wasn't sure if that's anatomical possible ^^.
And with color in it, it will certainly be clearer. I'm looking forward to the colored version.
Fran will be in it, too, will she? I'm just establishing my love for those two

*begins to gesture again* .... I keep doing that... sorry. Anyway! Okay - so, so it looked like that to begin with? That's good, I think! If you'd like, I can show you my reference photo; it was a fiendish enough bit of rendering that I photographed my own hand holding a glass in a mirror so that I could get the particular right. Er, more right.
If you want to be HIGHLY technical - which is fine, it's fun! - the pose is not impossible but it actually IS a little unlikely if analysed: I photographed myself holding an empty glass of extremely light weight (a very cool double-walled Bodum glass); Balthier is holding what appears to be an ordinary glass that's half-full of liquid; thus one would assume that it would be heavy, too heavy for the 'fingertip' grip I was describing.
... I like it, though, better than his whole hand wrapped around the glass. Am I totally terrible?
Yes, Fran will be in it! As it pleases you, check out (in my gallery) 'sketch for 'Magicians.'' This Balthier will replace that one entirely.. because that one, anatomically, is a MESS.

*grinning* no problem
Yes, I thought it looked like that to begin with. I'd like to see the photo if you would show me.
Ok, so I was almost right, it's kind of complicated to hold a glass that way, I tried it yesterday and it felt ...crampy^^
but you're right, it looks more interesting than just holding the glass like everybody else.
What would also be cool, would be holding the glass with the fingertips from above... you know? *begins gesticulating, too* so that the hand is above the glass with the fingertips holding the glass and pointing down... i think...
yes I've seen the sketch and asked because I find frans face absolutely beautiful *love*.
it's fun to have such a constructive and creative conversation
may I add you to my friends?

Ocassionally, I do embarass myself.. I was a bit busy, and got a bit distracted with my horse sculpture, but I didn't think that I'd gotten over a month busy! Eesh, I am really sorry!
Here is the photo that I used for reference for Balthier's hand:
[link]
I've coloured out the background.. a room that I use as a messy little storage closet has, oddly enough, a full-length mirror! Weird old house. Anyway! I believe that the perspective makes sense, particularly if you look at the top of that glass.. it's tipped toward the palm, as it is being supported by just the fingertips. In the photo I think that the pinky makes sense.. it's supporting the weight of the glass/controlling the way the glass 'swings' from the fingertips sorta like a little post. It's a wineglass or teacup sorta grip; and it works here and looks comfy (I think?) because the glass I'm holding is so very light (and delicate, and got broken yesterday. ) .. I think I said before that it's a bit unrealistic, in a way, since most glass-glasses like this are pretty heavy.
Holding from above! *gestures* Like this, right? Palm down towards the opening of the glass? Oh, that IS cool! Usually when I have people holding glasses in drawings that's how I do it.
I can't say why, really, I just.. I just like to have people holding things in slightly odd ways! It's a me-thing in my art, I guess. Complicated hands, that are pesty to draw.
Thank you for adding me to your friends, it's an honour! I have added you to mine, I hope you don't mind. Again, I'm sorry for zoning out on you for so long.. I got bitten by that pesky sculpting bug!

yep, from above. I depicted it in my new picture... originally I intended it to be somethin different, but later I got this Idea. Link
*grin* I'd like drawing complicated poses as well but its so difficult that I give up most times ^^ I'm just drawing a priestess casting some spell and am very proud of the hands. But its not finished yet.

Too little time, and too much of that little time spent being mad about having to be at work at 7am! Honestly, I drive me crazy sometimes!
*takes a peek* My goodness! Now, that's my kind of shirt.. Leaves very little to the imagination... I wonder if Balthier would look good in one? Hmm.. oh! Sorry! Hands.. yes.. *looks* .. ah! That IS the hand-holding-glass post that I like so much.
You've done a good job with it! Is this watercolour..? Coloured pencil? It's very smooth!
Anyway.. I still need to fiddle with Balthier's hand a bit more, his pinky still looks short instead of in perspective. Rarrgh, perspective! I shall throw ye out the window and draw like Picasso!

Its done with copic markers like almost all of my pics recently. I've taken a liking to these. The drawing is very smooth and you can create good shading effects. Nothing compared to digital painting, but its a start

It's likely that I just scanned in fewer cathairs, this time.
WELL - now I need to go shopping (conditioner, dish soap, food for Mouser, I am forgetting something), but after that I am going to see if I can't get Fran back in there. She's gotten a bit of work also; I think she's looking well these days!

Or maybe I'm just delusional. Either way, it looks even better than I remember it. Maybe my brain was just foggier when I looked at it last time, most likely in the ealy hours of the morning.
I'm assuming Mouser is your cat? The one who leaves hairs everywhere? I lub kitties so much. My two, Vidi and Nike (The latter, along with our biggest dog Athena, are the resident big shedders in the household.), are crackheads, but I love them anyway.
I'm excited to see Fran!

Just between us, 'delusional' is pretty much my standard operating state these days (too many 7am days in a row does bad things to the mental state of an established nightowl), so I'm the last one who'd hold it against you.
'Mouser' (name not 100% decided) actually is a mouse, if you can believe it; one of my cats caught him, thus ending the question of which cat it was that was catching the mice - Callie, the same one that leaves the hairs in the scanner (she sleeps on it.)
I tell myself that at least my house is a house, and so I can turn my music up as loud as I like, and thus sharing it with a mouse or two isn't too terrible. This is th' coooouunnnntry, after all.
I have it on pretty good authority that I should not be keeping Mouser as a pet; as wild mice can carry diseases. To that I say, well, then what would YOU do with him? Putting him outside seems cruel; he is a tiny baby house mouse, not a fieldmouse. I'm not going to let him go in the house, either, obviously. Therefore, new pet.
What is it about us artistic types and crackheaded cats? Fina likes to talk out loud to noone; Callie exists in her own dimension, which brushes up against ours just enough that we can see her, most of the time anyway (she occasionally does vanish, particularly when the vacuum cleaner is turned on). What she can see that we can't is the demons in the wall outlets. She stares.. it's a little unnerving at times.
What else... oh! I think you'll like Fran!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
MorganEdwardAshton In reply to razimo [2007-06-11 21:42:39 +0000 UTC]
Oh yeah, "delusional" pretty much sums it up. Isn't being nocturnal in a diurnal world fun?
Mouser sounds cute. If there had been a little baby house mouse in our house and the animals didn't get to it and kill it before I could put it in a cage...and the family didn't kill me...yeah, I'd keep it. I do, however, have terrible luck with rodents. They like to bite me. Even the ones that don't bite anyone else. -.-
Man, being able to turn my music up right now is glorious, since I'm currenly residing in the very back room of the house. We live in more of a suburb area than the country, definitely, but we get our fair share of random creatures. We had a rat a few days ago (which Charlie, one of our dogs, caught and killed), and there's been a wild turkey roaming the neighborhood for some time.
Yeah, I think artistic people are attracted to crackheaded animals, in general. Athena, one of the other dogs, is the canine version of Vidi, plus an extra 50 or so pounds...and gigantic bat-ears.
Hmm, demons in wall outlets...Vidi doesn't see those, but she does seem to see things in the corners that we can't, and I wonder if there's actually something there sometimes, with the way she sits there, fascinated. Nike, the other cat, is a ninja. I think she and Calli may have the same talent of being able to dimension-shift. You can open a door for 2 seconds, while Nike is on the other side of the house, and when you close it, there she is. It's crazy.
I think I'll like Fran, too. I'm excited.
