Description I have so many influences! This meme isn't even half of them.

The black and white section:

1. Kazuo Umezu. Generally considered the best horror manga-ka of all time. I absolutely love the his cross hatching and the way he tells his stories.

2. Aubrey Beardsley a late 1800s British illustrator. The amount of detail that goes into his work blows my mind.

3. Takaya Miou, a surrealist manga-ka. My art was never the same after discovering her. I can't describe just how beautiful her work s.

4. Jaimie Hernandez, best punk cartoonist ever (lol I'm SO not biased). His storytelling is just beautiful and I can relate more to his work than to almost anything else.

5. Charles Meryon, a late 1800s French printmaker. I was already into the "gothic cross-hatching" style for about five years before I discovered him only to learn that he practically invented that style.

6. Edward Gorey, everyone should know who he is. He single-handedly inspired me to include cross-hatching in my drawings.

7. Christie C. Road, a zine writer who created Green Day's first fanzine (and got a song named after her in response). Her drawings, in addition to being beautifully rendered, are painfully expressive and always have interesting messages.

8. Kouyu Shurei, creator of the manga "Alichino". Discovering her was the first step in my transition from wannabe-otaku into something more.

9. Fly, another zine writer. Her work is always so interesting and she portrays realistic (and sometimes even real) worlds that are far more foreign and engaging than any fantasy.

10. Junji Ito, a horror manga-ka. He's an expert storyteller and his artwork is nothing short of phenomenal.

11. Bobby Madness, another punk cartoonist. His work is funny and relateable while still having an air of mystique to it.

12. Raymond Pettibon, a graphic designer most famous for his work with the band, Black Flag. I love all the stark contrast in his work.

13. Yuki Kaori, a fantasy manga-ka. Her work strikes the perfect balance of dark and whimsical.

14. Charles Addams a cartoonist most famous for creating the "Addams Family". It should go without saying how awesome and influential this guy is.

15. Bill Watterson, creator of "Calvin and Hobbes". "Calvn and Hobbes" was my first favorite cartoon and basically set me on the course for the rest of my life.

The colored section:

1. The "Amelia's Notebook" series by Marissa Moss. Long before I discovered zines, "Amelia's Notebook" taught me how to combine collage and personal stories to create art.

2. Mary Grandpre', illustrator most famous for her work on the "Harry Potter" series. I was lucky enough to have my parents read me a lot of picture books when I was young. All the illustrators stayed with me but I'd bet none more than her.

3. Camilla D'Errico, Canadian painter and cartoonist. I've talked enough about how much I worship her.

4. "Doktor Sleepless" by Warren Ellis taught me to think about the world in an entirely different way...not to mention that it's the only comic besides "Hetalia" that talks in depth about the Principality of Sealand.

5. Camille Rose Garcia, painter and illustrator most famous for illustrating a new edition of "Alice in Wonderland". I just love how original her style is.

6. Yoshitaka Amano, generally considered the greatest modern Japanese artist. Again, it should go without saying how awesome he is.

7. I was never as into Disney as other animation geeks but I make an exception for "101 Dalmatians" . The art-nouveau inspired style is incredible (not that you can tell from this picture).

8. Freida Kahlo, everyone should know who she is. She really inspired me to make pieces based on my personal experiences.

9. James Jean, a cartoonist best known for his work on Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba's "The Umbrella Academy". I'm just in awe of how fluid and beautiful his work is.

10. Maurice Sendak, an esteemed author/illustrator best known for "Where the Wild Things Are". Again, this should go without saying.

11. Tara McPherson, a pop-surrealist artist/illustrator. I see her work everywhere: my job, the internet, various small local galleries and I love it. I think she's inspired me subconsciously because I never tried to make art inspired by hers and yet her influence is in a lot of my work.

12. Dave McKean, a cartoonist/illustrator most famous for his illustrations of Neil Gaiman's work. I read "Coraline" for the first time at age ten and it changed my life. McKean's has this beautiful sense of mystery to it, just incredible.

13. Audrey Kawasaki, a pop-surrealist artist. She single-handedly inspired me to try painting on wood.

14. Charles Schultz, creator of "Peanuts". I can't describe jut how much I can relate to Charlie Brown.

And finally...

15. The guy who got me into going to punk shows, zines, indie comics and so much more, Mitch Clem, creator of "Nothing Nice to Say".

Amelia's Notebook isn't one of my influences [or is it!] but holy damn I remember reading those! I loved them. I had journals like that.

Nothing Nice to Say was pretty rad, too. I dunno if he's updated since I last read his comic though. he hadn't updated for months even then.

might have to do this meme sometime. dunno if there's much ART that inspires me; it'd probably be a dozen photographs of Mick Jones and Joe Strummer's clothes. can't remember who designed their more military-style shit... it wasn't vivienne westwood and malcom mcclaren was it?
