Saint-Omer (France), August 2017

The Cathédrale Notre-Dame of Saint-Omer, in northern France, was built and progressively extended over the years, mainly from the 13th to the 16th century, when the western tower, pictured here, was consolidated and redesigned in the Gothic style. No longer a cathedral since the diocese of Saint-Omer was absorbed into the diocese of Arras in 1801, it is still commonly referred to as "the cathedral", in deference to its past history and its monumental architecture.

At the time when this photograph was taken, the cathedral was undergoing major renovation works, with the western tower and the main entrance already restored to scrubbed-out cleanliness. Captured at the end of a sun-drenched summer day, the newly pristine stone seemed to soar towards the pure blue sky of early August like a soul yearning for perfection.
