Description And now, in wake of the season finale episode, I'm dishing out fanart of the Rebellion.
I have this theory Starlight Glimmer will try to use time-travel to remake Equestria into an Equal Empire ruled by her.
To me, it has this "Man in the High Castle" vibe.
So in a role-play sense, I thought up a troop of rebels, come together in this alternate timeline, to defy and over throw Starlight Glimmer!
(They may not be successful so far, but only because the Mane 6 must be the ones to stop her.)

These are only six members of the Resistance, but if not the leading members, they are very important to the cause of Freedom!
Partly because most of them don't have cutie marks to steal, but also because they each have been touched by the "fabled" magic of Friendship.
You see, in this time line, the Elements of Harmony have fallen away to little more than legend.  That's why the resistance makes it their insignia of freedom!

(From left to right)

GWENDOLYN: She's a griffon who prides herself on being the fastest (and flight-prone) member of the Resistance.  She may not be the oldest, but she's the most experienced, and has been a rebel far longer than any of her friends.  She came to Equestria for a better life, only to find the oppression outweighed the decay and poverty in Griffonstone.  She often brags how she lost her left eye fighting for the rebels, even fabricates it to sound gruesome.  But really, the rebels know better: she wears that eye patch because she has pink eye.  Either way, you DON'T want a look under that eye patch.
She may be self-absorbed and thick-headed at times, but she's dedicated and brave.  And most importantly, she earned her place among the rebels because she's loyal.  You see, she had to jump through so many hoops to prove to the Resistance she was trustworthy, and wouldn't be bought off by Starlight.  During that time, she grew to enjoy their company, and admired their griffon-like defiance against oppression.  Ironically, her loyalty was put to the test when she was reluctantly kicked out of the rebels.  Soon after, Gwen learned there was a spy among the rebels.  The spy was willing to pay the griffon handsomely if she looked the other way, or even helped him.  Why, he even offered her a handsome sum of bits to prove he wasn't lying!  Well she was no longer a rebel, protecting those ponies wasn't her problem anymore.  Yet, she couldn't deny her friendship with the rebels meant something.  As a matter of fact, even after they kicked her out, some of those rebels remained friends with her.  Gwen knew she couldn't turn her back on them.  Besides, this spy stood for everything she resented, cowardice, disloyalty, and treachery!  So she fought and exposed him, overcoming her deep-rooted greed.  And Gwen was rightfully welcomed back, and awarded the crimson lightning bolt of LOYALTY!

IDENA STUBBORN: She's an orphaned donkey who was raised by equal ponies.  Her place in the equal society has always been trouble-some, given she's essentially like a goose in a flock of pigeons.  So she went searching for any living relatives who would take her in.  But she was stopped by equal ponies ordered to (ahem) shorten her ears through cosmetic surgery.  (Hence the notch in her left ear).  Fortunately, some rebel ponies saved her before it was too late.  In light of her recent trauma, the rebels allowed her to stay with them while she mentally recuperated.  It took years before Idena healed from the experience, but in the meantime, the rebels became her new adopted family.  Surrounded by ponies who cared about her, it melted their hearts to know they made her smile again.
It was something special when Zalu'lu the zebra joined the rebels, because for some reason, Idena has the crazy notion Zalu'lu is her long-lost aunt.  All the same, she looks up to Zalu'lu as a mother-figure.  True to her name-sake, Idena is stubborn, as well as out-spoken.  She tends to be silly and playful, but deep down, it's an indication she's still haunted by her past.  You see, it's been said the reason she's eccentric is because her traumatic experience "scared the normal out of her".  But the rebels wouldn't change her if they could.  Idena is a sweet and optimistic donkey who will go out of her way to cheer you up, even giving a shoulder to cry on.  She has a healthy, hearty sense of humor without equal.
Part of the reason Gwen likes her is because she likes her humor.  At first, Gwen used to think Idena's jokes were offensive for a griffon.  But the young donkey meant nothing personal, and she taught that a good humor is more important than pride.  In turn, Gwen reminds Idena to stay focused when out on a mission.
Idena also became codename "Captain Candy" when she started delivering sweets and goodies to all the little equal colts and fillies.  She even goes so far as to exaggerate her role by dressing like a 90s soldier.  Her mission to bring these candies brings smiles to the children, earning her the sapphire balloon of LAUGHTER!  (Based off of Gail Halvorsen).

ZALU'LU: She's a zebra who hailed from the same country as Zecorra.  She brought her husband and foals along, unaware of the dangers she faced in this brave new world.  It was one thing, having different cutie marks.  But not cutie mark removal spell could remove the zebras' stripes.  She earned her place with the rebels when she warned them of a trap set up for them, especially because her family's life depended on saving the Resistance.  Her honesty was rewarded before long.  The zebra family was granted sanctuary from the intolerant equal ponies.  In time, she joined the rebels as their doctor and medic, being skilled in natural remedy potions.  As a show of her rebel status, she wears the amber apple of HONESTY as a bead on her earrings.  She is the eldest, if not the one whose been in the rebels the longest.  Zalu'lu is wise, responsible, and the voice of reason.  She is, however, overprotective of those she cares about.  And she's very foreboding when she worries too much.
As the eldest, she sees her closest friends as adopted daughters.  And if she were their mother, she would be very good at it.  She will lend a listening ear when they want some-pony to talk to.  She won't judge Gwen about her boastings.  And not only is she immune to being annoyed by Idena's silliness, but also empathizes the donkey's orphan status.  But at the same time, she's not indulgent.  She will chide them when it comes down to irresponsible or careless behavior.  And when they go too far, she won't hold back on stinging words like "irresponsible" or "disappointed".

SMOKE CHASER: She is a diamond dog who was abandoned as a pup.  That same night, some rebel ponies found her and took her in out of pity.  They saw no harm in adopting her, diamond dogs weren't smart enough to act as spies for Starlight Glimmer.  But this diamond dog sure was more energetic.  Even for a pup as small as her, she was more energetic than they could handle.  Living indoors of their hide-out wasn't enough for her, so they were forced to bring her along on one of their missions.  During that time, however, a fire started in their hide-out while they were gone.  The whole place would've burnt to the ground, had the diamond puppy not alerted them and ran all the way back to the hide-out in record time.  It was a dark day, but the fire was put out, the hide-out was still standing, and every pony was safe.  All thanks to the diamond dog they deemed "Smoke Chaser" because of how she dashed towards the direction of the trail of smoke.
The youngest member (if not the most recent), it's easy to think she's an amateur at being a rebel.  But she'll surprise you.  Being a Dalmatian diamond dog, she's immune to scorching temperatures.  Smoke Chaser may be smarter than most diamond dogs, but she's also gullible, and talks in the same speech pattern as her fellow diamond dogs.
Her friendship with Gwen was initially rocky at first (considering Smoke Chaser's a canine, and Gwen is essentially part cat).  But they came to be like a big sister and little sister, squabbling from time to time yet learning to get along more and more each day.  Smoke Chaser's close friends with Idena, who she supplies the chocolate and candy for the oppressed fillies and colts.  She modestly insists it's not generosity, but simply that she can't eat chocolate without falling ill.  But she can't hide what a generous giver she is.  As fate would have it, she wears the rebels' amethyst diamond of GENEROSITY as a doggy license on her collar.

BOOGER: Seriously, that's the name of the smooze.

WEST WINDY: A breezy who has always felt out of place among her own kind. But never did she dream of ever leaving the Breezy world, not until a pollination migration separated her from her group.  Or befriending a giant smooze who took her in.  For a time, the smooze took care of her and protected her from the dangers most breezies wouldn't survive.  West Windy came to affectionately name her new pet "Booger", the Breezy word for "Gentle Giant".  One day, she repaid the smooze's kindness when it was captured for studies by scientist ponies.  Using her small size and sprightly agility, she unlocked Booger's cage and made off with him.
The Rebels took them both in under the mistaken assumption Booger could talk.  Through her Smooze friend, West Windy communicated with the rebels and offered a helping hand in the cause.  She and Booger earned the Pink Butterfly of KINDNESS, not by being kind to the rebels necessarily, but by kindly convincing equal guard ponies to leave peacefully.  Moved by the duo's kind actions, they were welcomed among the rebel ponies.  West Windy shares a strong bond with Booger that only pet-owners understand.  She may get exasperated with Booger's appetite, but it would break the Breezy's heart to lose her friend.  She's feisty, sweet, good-natured, and hospitable.  She'll go the extra mile to be nice to her friends.  But she tends to be over apologetic, even if it wasn't her fault.  And sometimes, she won't admit when she's overworking herself.  So she needs Booger and the others to remind her she needs to listen to her body and rest.  She loves to give Zalu'lu neck rubs, as she worships her motherliness and hard work.  She idolizes Gwendolyn's brave stories, and will relay them to any pony who will listen.  She acts like a "big" sister for Smoke Chaser, who loves rolling in the mud with Booger.  And when she's tired out, Idena will gladly tell stories to the Breezy while she rests.

And then, there's the Mare (in the high castle)!  She's the "leader", in loose terms.  No pony knows who she is or where she came from.  But she has frightening knowledge of Equestria as the free world we know and love.  And even from the shadows and from afar, she's close friends with the rebels, especially these ones.

(UPDATE)

After seeing the episode itself, I guess modifications are in order.

This is only a thoery on my part, but perhaps Sun Burst could be the Mare in the High Castle.  (Imagine Starlight's astonishment when she unmasks her life-long foe to find it was ironically her childhood friend.  Or how devastated Sun Burst is to learn his cutie mark lead to Starlight becoming the worst dictator who ever lived.)

In the "mane" timeline, Sun Burst became friends with each of these creatures during his years studying to be a wizard.  Each one marked a time in his life he failed to be a wizard, but also marked a new, helpful experience in friendship.  It was destiny he was meant to part ways with Starlight so he could unite these friends, before reuniting with her.

Enjoy!

"My little Pony: Friendship is Magic" belongs to Hasbro and Lauren Faust.
And "The Man in the High Castle" (the tv series) belongs to Frank Spotnitz.

I love this! Very well done, "The Mare in The High Castle" I love that name, my only guess is the only safe place is the kingdom that is untoachable by the Equalists, "The Dragon Lands" they are the strongest species in Equestria(From what I learned from The Gauntlet of Fire, even Celestia and Luna don't mess with them)

And thank you!

I couldn't help but think Starlight's (former) view on equality resembled "The Man in the High Castle".

That may be correct!  It would explain how the rebels' lair caught on fire: a stray dragon must've breathed fire too close to it.
