Description This is the third sketch in my Native American series.

My best accomplishment in this one is successfully capturing the softness of the feather headress. Just wondering about how I was going to manage that made me delay even attempting to do this one for a couple of months- In the end it wasn't as difficult as I had feared.

In my own opinion this is the best one out of the series.

Amazing work man, I couldn't agree more the feathers have a light-weight feel to them where his face carries the weight of his years, very well done!

Thank you. It's a nice sense of accomplishment when you crack a difficult problem like those feathers.

Sometimes though I wonder if I made it too dark though while going for the high contrast.

That is understandable but I enjoy the contrast, it draws your eyes to the feathers and then down the face. It is also important to note that I feel this could be viewed as a highly emotional piece based on the contrast and expression which work very well together.

Amazing work how long did this take you?

This was done something like 15 or 20 years ago so I can't really remember how long I spent on it exactly but in general these sorts of portraits took me anywhere from 8 to 20 hours or so.

Amazing work. Someday I'd love to be this talented.

Hard work and dedication but most of all a willingness to experiment.

Not everyone will be able to produce the same type of works - some artists are simply better suited for one genre or style of traditional art then another. It took me awhile to come to the conclusion that my natural talents fell into doing black and white sketches with a reliance on high contrast and the use of negative space.

Try different things and figure out what you're good at and then hone those skills.

Thanks for your commments. It has been a long time since I've picked up a pencil for detailed traditional work. My last real study was done seven years ago, and I can't even remember the last time I worked with colors on paper. I've been experimenting with a lot of different media, mostly digital work however.

You have an amazing talent and I look forward to more of your work. *Hats off*

I love your use of darks here. It's not very often you see a portrait with half of the face in shadow, but I really like how it looks.

Haha. You do shadows so perfectly.. I have trouble with darkened backgrounds and heavy shadows. The person always ends up popping out of the picture, looking out of place... You know what I mean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

realitysquared In reply to GiveEmHellKid000 [2006-07-01 01:57:09 +0000 UTC]

You need to develope a good eye and light touch for the transitional shadows. Using some subtle shades between the darkest areas and the bright white of the page will help knit the two together.

It's just something which you need to learn through doing.

Very cool, I love the lines under his eyes, and on the bridge of his nose. The light hitting his face is super realistic, and I dont know why on this one but the cords around his neck are cool too. I guess I like most of the image, but its to dark, is the image smudged or do you have a bad scanner?

You have captured the essence of this man.His proud expression comes through. Excellent work. I to, have dabbled in pencil artwork. My best results were a Farrari Lusso 250 GT, an Arabian horse and a world war 11 GI in combat. They were done in the early 60's when I got bored with myself. I just picked up an ordinary pencil and started ...unfortunately I can't share then with you as they were lost in the many relocations in my life.
