Description Little did you know that I was a traditional pencil-and-paper artist as well as a digital one. This was hand-drawn back in '95 or '96. Comments?

your pencil is magic.
Is this mixed media? Did you use ink for those darks and wash tones? Looks as if you did. Just part of the pencil magic?
Speaking of ink, I don't see any in your gallery. Do you ever use brush and quill?

Its all done with, what I think I remember to be, an HB Pencil or if not that another soft graphite pencil- no ink at all.

I used to dabble with ink, both quill and brush, back when I was in my late teens or early twenties but I preferred the level of control which you could get with pencils over inks.

HB?! I would think 6-8B to make such rich blacks.

The level of control . . . Hmm. Different media, different scales. You mean you just didn't reach the same level of skill with both? Didn't want to put in the time to get there?

Ink is the most challenging media, for me. But recently I went back to continuous tone with graphite. I discovered that it was easy for me only up to a point. Pushing beyond that, it's again challenging. Nothing I do in pencil looks truly finished. It all looks like preliminary work for another medium.

For me it seems that pencil facilitates expression to the extent that one grasps art principles, whereas ink tests one to the limit - makes one look like a fool until he masters the equipment, even if he understands the principles. In that sense it just more difficult than pencil.

For example, with dry brush and caressing pen strokes, one can generate continuous tone with ink comparing very well with what is done with dry media like graphite and charcoal. But, it takes years and years to get the hang of it (for me, anyway). With pencil one can do the same thing the first time he attempts it.

At any event you answered the second question I was going to ask, if you ever finish, or rather translate, your pencils to ink. That would be, no.

Ever use CARBON SKETCH pencils, like General's 595? and Wolf's CARBON 838? Or General's extra black LAYOUT pencil (555)? What about graphite sticks, charcoal, charcoal pencils, etc. Are you picky about equipment, like this, or do you use whatever is at hand. I would think that to Finish in pencil, as you do, one has to think ahead and chose the right equipment.

While I am a huge fan of reference, this seems a little TOO based on reference. You are getting a nice range of the pencil, but by leaving all that blown out white, it feels more like copying from a photograph and less like inspiration. It's a nice abstraction, but it feels like the camera did most of the work.

Though, now I see it's almost 20 years old...you probably have a more developed style by now.

Well, in general my traditional sketch work relies on high contrast, a fair amount of negative space and trying to 'suggest' shapes without having to draw an outline.

Takes a bit of practice to figure it all out.

i'm not sure why you're getting the mediocre grades from people; i think this composition is excellent. i *wish* i could draw a human face so it looked like a person...

i think the use of negative space is excellent, and the detail in this piece is exactly where it needs to be.

while some people may not think sketching a nude to be a novel, "trendy" form of art, it's the root of many of the greatest artists in history...

keep up the great work!!
