Description
I originally started this with the intention of creating it as a purely black and white image which would rely heavily upon the use of negative space. That changed a bit during the execution.
Using a photographic referance as a guide this image was created entirely using the airbrush tool in Photoshop6 in about eight to ten hours.
Other than that I'm afraid there isn't much to say about it; I think the image will have to speak for itself.

i really like this, good work, but for me the realism is lost in the eye - too much dynamic range relative to the rest of the image.
overall, very nice though.

This looks more like a zebra than a real zebra does.
What is it called, when a representation looks more like a thing than the thing itself does? Oh, yeah - ART!

Why is there a pentagram in it's eye?
Or am I just seeing things?

This... is absolutely stunning.
I saw it on Lolly's wishlist and I just had to come look at it, and leave a few words..
When it comes to looking to a photograph... it does... it looks so amazingly real and really makes me want to get back to painting : |
I have to say the washed out effect around the edges of the piece looks wonderful, it just.. really adds something in place of a scenic background
really great work hun

Rather an attractive subject, I like the attention to detail especially on the nose... but the black strips themselves seem a bit too _clean_ Zebras usually have etching around there stripes fine areas of black and white merging it looks rather "stamped on" so to speak. Other then that it great.

realitysquared In reply to p-51 [2004-03-02 04:07:53 +0000 UTC]
I agree- but essentially I was attempting to draw as much attention to the empty space as possible, and while feathering the black and white stripes together would provide more realism I felt it would detract from the emphasis I was trying to place on the blankness.

Beautiful, YOui still play off of the negative space quite a bit (and in your favor), especially with that left ear. You've also managed to accurately display the texture and moisture on the nose _quite_ well. Also, I think the shading was a good choice on your part (as though it was going to be someone else's part....).

realitysquared In reply to admin-sever15 [2004-03-01 01:08:08 +0000 UTC]
Thanks,
I originally wanted this to be purely an excersise in Negative Space, but my penchant for realism quickly altered that in the execution.
Ironically it came out far better than I think it would have if I had stuck to my original plan.

VERY well done.. the texture is all there in the right spots, and i think that really helps wit hthe realism.. as well as the great tonal control and such
oh, and is that a star patter of some sort in the pupil? looks neat regardless..

Its a really nice looking portrayal of a beautiful animal. And impressive that you made this in a relatively short time with such good result.
Everything looks solid great on this, one thing i thought about was the eye, im not familiar with how much edge there is above the eye on a zebra, but it seems a bit dark. Perhaps ligthening it up a bit would easen it up against the rest of the animal. Looks good as it is, but perhaps could be pushed up another level with some more brightness there.
Well done, its almost a bit hypnotic aswell now that i looked at it for a while..
