Description
I was giving some thought to weapons and their proportions, so I decided to post this.A standard (one-handed) long sword is roughly 36-38 inches - that's from the end of the pommel to the tip of the blade.
A hand-and-a-half sword would be around 40-42 inches, with a slightly longer grip - maybe 8-10 inches.
A polearm or halberd is somewhere close to 8 feet.
A longbow is between 7 and 8 feet.
But what I was really thinking about as I made this was "How long is a 'standard' arrow?"
The arrow needs to be long enough to extend several inches beyond the front of the bow when drawn.
To give an idea of this, standing with your left arm extended, hold a stick vertical and parallel to your body. Hold another stick parallel to the ground with your right hand. The end of the stick in your right hand should just touch your cheek, as your right fist will be almost directly under your ear.
Basically, stand like you're holding a bow and arrow.
Now extend the index finger of your left hand. If it helps, hold your finger and thumb up like a gun....pew pew
The tip of your arrow should be a few inches beyond the tip of your finger.
The distance to which you can draw your bowstring is the approximately the length of your left arm plus the width of your chest.
The size of your bow depends on how tall and strong you are.
For a quick and easy reference, the length of your arrow is pretty close to the length of your sword.
For example: I'm rather tall at 6'3" with long arms and legs.
My bow is 6'6". One of my arrows is 38 inches.
I have a sword that is exactly 36" and it feels a bit short. I'd prefer the sword to be closer to 39 inches, with a slightly longer blade and grip/pommel.
The trick to finding the right sword is that it should be just a bit shorter than your leg, so when it hangs on your belt it should just touch the top of your boot.
