Oooooh, I see!
The ink creates a starker contrast with the white paper, allowing you to just one-click color-in your ink-sketch without having to re-trace it digitally to prevent those nasty color-artifacts at the edges, or having to actually fill in the color manually on a seperate layer ...
Plus, it seems possible to just trim or add to any malformed outlines digitally without it being too obvious.
Now THAT is useful !
Thanks for the insight.

So, if you're angry, do you use the biggest one?
And if you feel like a ballerina dancing on a leaf, do you use the tiny baby 0.07 one?

Would you mind sharing how long you've been drawing? I'm trying to learn but I'm having difficulty getting past the first few steps; it's hard to get confident in my drawing abilities when it seems so bad.

what kind of pencil do you use? i can tell its mechanical but not sure what
I like how the pencil looks its all soft and clean (though may be my own fault that my pencil drawings come off so dark and grainy xD)

so you actually draw this traditionally, huh? how do you color? magic wand and lasso, I guess?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
RedApropos In reply to Pony-Berserker [2013-10-16 19:17:20 +0000 UTC]
Magic wand, yes. Lasso, no.
I use the magic wand whenever I use gradients. Other than that, I just use the paint bucket tool.
Nuttin' fancy. :3
All the drawing is done by hand, always, for everything.
How about you? What's your process?

Pony-Berserker In reply to RedApropos [2013-10-16 19:28:36 +0000 UTC]
well, since you use bucket, you can see it kinda ruins your lineart. It's rather visible, you know. So, instead, try using this trick:
duplicate the lineart layer, change the blending mode of the upper one to multiply, create a new layer between these two, color on this layer. Repeat for infinite money
this way you shouldn't maul the lineart. can confirm this works.
well, I even sketch things on tablet but I use a program that simulates real life drawing (just a "round tip" pen tool for drawing. no fancy photoshop brushes. When I need to draw a perfect circle, I need to use a stencil, or a ruler for drawing a straight line)
and I sketch things 3 or 4 times - 1. very rough sketch, 2. less rough sketch (on a layer above), 3. cleaner sketch (on a layer above), 4. final sketch that still sucks, but it's good enough to work with oh and there is correcting proportions and mistakes between phases.
then the lineart and coloring.
I think it's still good enough for me - someone who barely can draw

and don't get me wrong. I didn't mean to say your lineart is bad or something like that You could just keep it smoother

RedApropos In reply to Pony-Berserker [2013-10-16 21:16:01 +0000 UTC]
OOOOH, I know what you mean!
I do that on purpose. I adjust the levels and contrast so it's all only black and white, solid lines with no artifacts. I can just blot the colour straight on, solid.
For the record, it's all in 300 DPI.

Pony-Berserker In reply to RedApropos [2013-10-16 21:21:24 +0000 UTC]
well, if that works for you.
btw, I'm lame. I draw in 72 DPI

Pony-Berserker In reply to RedApropos [2013-10-16 20:26:19 +0000 UTC]
well, it's a bit exaggerated word for this of course, but the lineart in the photo looks neatly, but when you color it in such a way, you can see pixellated border between the color and the lineart (it's visible esp. in the AJ picture). when you draw digitally, the color is in a layer below the lineart, so it's never a problem.
when you google how to draw traditional lineart, people never use bucket tools, and wand is used only with very good DPI.
