Taking a break from the usual, to try out something a little different.I've fallen in love with the movie 'Constantine' recently, there's something about it that means so much to me. I think that Keanu did a great job portraying John's attitude and overall moodiness. I know there are a lot of hardcore Hellblazer fans who don't, and there are people who are critical of Keanu himself, but I really did enjoy that movie.
Back to the picture; Starting completely from scratch in Photoshop, this has taken me about 23 hours altogether. Surprisingly I didn't leave it for 10 months before I finished it, like I usually do. XD I did it all in the space of 3 days. [Yeah, the hours add up to 23 though, I didn't work on it constantly. o_o]
I had a reference picture to help me... and overall I'm happy! It actually kinda creeps me out.
I've never done color portraits before, only the black and white ones of Linkin Park, and never this size either. I enjoyed it a lot.
Repetitive Strain ahoy, I think... but what the hell. ;D I'd like to do more. Maybe one of Johnny Depp or something.
Just in case anyone is wondering how I put pics like this together, I did screencaps as I was going along. I annotated it too... just to give you the general idea. Woot.

I have been working on a picture for some time now, that also has a stock image, just the same as yours of Keanu. It's an image I found that I am trying to digitally, repaint. I do not use Photoshop, but OpenCanvas, which is pretty much the same- with similiar features- although I do not have certain brushes...
I was wondering- about his skin and eyes! How you drew his eyes, is amazing, I wish to capture eyes that well! I don't know much about that, really- but then you added texture to the face- the skin looks almost real! I wish to know, if you don't mind telling me, how you managed to make his skin look real! You mentioned something about... noise in your annotation- but I wasn't certain how you did it.
And my last question is how you drew his face to make it look like it was stubbly! I am dieing to know how you did it!
Obviously, I am quite taken with your work. I was desperately search for a tutorial through my favorites and I saw your comment on my page- thanking me for a favorite? Then I looked in my favorites and found your picture! It would mean so much to me if you can assist me with this- in anyway you can!

I have heard of OpenCanvas, I use it a lot for other drawings that I do and have tested out some portraits in it! I'll try and help as much as I can!
For his eyes, I zoomed in really close to get all of the details in. I also tried not to use the blur tool too much, so that his eyes would look sharp and realistic. As for his skin, I'm afraid the noise I mentioned is only available in Photoshop! It's a type of effect that you can apply to make colors a little more speckly than usual. That is mainly how I add texture to skin... I'm trying to think of something that you could use in OpenCanvas but I'm not sure. I have the very first version of oC and I'm sure they have all kinds of different tools in the newer ones! Which version do you have?

I love this. It's realistic, but there is a slightly abnormal shine on the chin. Other than that, I couldn't tell the difference from a photo. I love him in all the movies he's in. He is one AWESOME actor. EXCELLENT CHOICE.

So far this is the best looking of your realism pieces because you can instantly tell it's art rather than a photo. The picture of Trent had such a photographic look that it could be dismissed before a person noticed it was not a photograph. Also the annotations for this painting were very illuminating. I'm really proud of your work.

Sorry, I now see how long it took in your description. My stoner eyes must've skipped right over it.
As far as using layers, I tend to forget to make new layers or even know when it's a good time to do so. I sometimes work on something and then suddenly regret I didn't have something on a different layer.

I'm the same! Or I find that I've drawn on the wrong layer and I can't undo! *groan*
This picture used only two layers! I have one layer for the background at the bottom and then another layer for the lineart, which I then colour over. I don't use a different layer for the colours - too many layers confuse me! I tend to stick to two layers for everything I draw actually. Probably bad practice but it seems to work for me.

It's amazing how you can draw like this with so few flaws. You use mouse or tablet for this? I'm thinking of getting one, but I'm not sure yet, money issues you know
