Description
M'Ress from the 1973 animated adaptation of Star Trek released by Filmation. This was a commissioned piece I made to Paul S. Gibbs in 1997. He was an aspiring writer who, after having his manuscripts declined by Pocket Books, vhose to set up a website so anybody interested could read them free of charge.I discovered his site, simply titled "Two Star Trek Novels", in August '97. To be honest, I expected to read some outright "drek", but I sat in stunned awe when I completed the first of the two manuscripts. I contacted Gibbs via the e-mail link he provided which started a pen-pal friendship that lasted four years until his untimely death.
So taken by his work I offered my services to create a front page portrait that might help encourage the casual web serfer into downloading the text. Paul asked if I would depict the Caitain officer in the uniform style debuted in "The wrath of Khan" since his story took place several years after the events of the first motion picture. He also wanted something that might suggest her change in specialty, leaving communications for archeology. Oddly enough, I had just the thing, an image from a CD 0f clipart released by Corel, an image of an advanced city fallen into ruins. It looked like something from the animated feature "Heavy Metal". Paul loved it, but he was torn. He also had a more whimsical portrait drawn by the very talented Ken Singshow and he didn't want to offend either of us by featuring one more prominant than the other. I can't remember what he decided.
Well, this image has gathered virtual "dust" for ages, but recently a friend named Mapper has urged me to place this and other pieces upon Deviant Art where they might get more exposure. Eh, why not? It's "fan art" so I can't lay claim to the inspirational property anyway.
Sincerely,
Bill

If the site is no longer active, where are the stories?
I'd like to read them.

Odds are, if we ever do see M'Ress or any other Caitians, it will be within the realm of the pro level fan films like "Star Trek: Phase II" or other similar productions.
Yes, I've read the interviews that claim the two young ladies in bed with Kirk for the most recent film "Into Darkness" were supposed to be Caitians. Sorry, I just don't "buy it". Other than CG animated tails, there was nothing felinoid about them, no "fur", no claws, nothing akin to muzzles ot even a "padded" nose, not even slitted contacts for the eyes or pointed tips for their ears. Shoot, one of the actresses talked about having "scales" applied as part of the makeup. Scales?! Since they were not addressed or referenced on camera as Caitians, it's easy to ignore the production's intent.
Sincerely,
Bill

Yes, I have heard that and share your assessment. They were not Caitains

Not that I would have evicted the lovely lasses if I found them in my chambers, but let's not identify them as something they clearly are not.

Thanks for the back story. Most seem to forget that the stories behind a work's creation are often just as enlightening as the piece itself.
Here's hoping its exposure brings you further success and more to seek out Paul's work.
I'd love to see a presentation done to try and convince Paramount to create a new animated Star Trek series. Maybe an anthology series that jumps all through the original timeline showing stories from all different eras? (maybe a few episodes long for each story). I really dont know why we dont see more things such as that where animation allows the imagination free reign, and not constrained by budget.

Well, I registered years ago so none of the material would be blocked, but Mapper has been "politely bugging" me recently to upload some stuff that can be linked to either "Team M'ress" and/or "Star Trek Artists Unite".
Sincerely,
Bill

Just to make it clear, you did read the part where I stated the decayed city was an image from a "clip art" CD released by Corel, right? I drew the full body portrait of M'Ress; inked it; colored it and added some simple shading, but that is all. The devestated vista was one of many background plates, both photographic and abstract burned upon a CD I bought in 1996.
Sincerely,
Bill

Well, my favorite catgirls are K'Tharr Rauthimas and Mzzkiti, both personal creations, but M'Ress was probably the first "serious" anthromorph I ever encountered (way back in 1973), though I didn't really think about her again until 1982 after I saw Paul Shrader's lurid reimagining of Val Lewton's "Cat People".
