Description
This is a fairly long tutorial. But, there’s a reason for that. I’d seen several other tutorials out there on Embroidered text, and they just weren’t as detailed or realistic as I would have liked to see them. So, I created this one. With it, you should be able to create some fairly realistic “embroidery” in Photoshop. While this tutorial should be followable by beginners, to get the full effects from it (knowing how to “play around” with the different settings that I suggest in the end to get your desired effect, for instance), you should know some of the basics of Photoshop. Like, what multiply does versus screen, etc. Even if you’re a beginner, however, you should still be able to follow my more precise instructions and get a good result.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask in the comments. Enjoy!

I haven't tried this yet, but would it work on more than just text? If I wanted embroidered leaves on a costume, or such, could this same process be used or is it only for text. (sorry to be such a newbie to manipulations, but I am. I am working on my very first one.)

No problem at all! Yes, it could be used for any shape, really. Thicker designs will work better than thin ones, if you have a choice. And if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask! This is a big tutorial for your first manipulation, so I'll help you through it however I can.

HELP!!!!
Sorry to do this to you, but I feel like such a noob (as compared to newbie). I know I am being daft or dense, but I just can't figure this out!
I have a seperate layer for the shape of the leaves on the dress, (and I have even done ALL the leaves - hoefully that was good and not bad). In your tutorial (on freaking step two no less) you say to rasterize text. I can not get that option (because mine is not text) and I can't find a "rasterize shape" or "rasterize image" or "rasterize selection" or anything. What do I do now?
I can put this in my scraps so you can see what I am working with if you would find that helpful to be able to help me. Just let me know.

Hey! Sorry for the late reply, I've been recovering from sinus surgery... ick! Anyway, since it's not text, you can just skip that step entirely and go on to the next one. Anytime you have to "rasterize" just skip that step.
Maybe you've gotten around it by now, though? Let me know how you're coming! Not sure exactly what you're going for with the design, but I'd be happy to look at it and give my advice. Feel free to go to my website (brushes.obsidiandawn.com) and click on the link to email me if you'd rather continue this there.

No, I hadn't gotten around it... It was kind of just paused on that layer waiting until you had an opportunity to respond.
Ewww... Sorry what you are going through. Husband has wanted to do that since before I knew him, but hasn't yet. Too much $$$. I hope you are getting better, and no stress about response time, it is taking me forever, I don't know much of anything about what I am doing so you really held up nothing when you look at the total scheme of things. It seems from the feedback of others I probably have bitten off more than I can chew with my experience. This however is not new, and I am determined.
Well, I would be more than happy to have you look at it, and give your input. It is currently up in scraps because I was getting Elandria's help too. The one that I am leaning towards is this: [link]
It is a section of a much larger piece, being divided into frames, like a diptych or whatever a 4 frame one would be (quadtych? ) I want each section to be able to stand on it's own, as well as a unit when all is said and done.
This is in an intermediate stage still, I am still doing things like puting highlights from the space sky, repainting the earth, and space sky, and finishing up Elandria's dress and hair, cleaning up the cutouts, and et al.
Because my canvas is so large, DA is really reducing it, but the Download does make it available to jump to fullsize.
I would love to get feedback from you as I respect your talents as well. Please understand the following though as you look at it...
I don't have a tablet. All I have is the touchpad on my laptop, and I can't use anything but my finger (I have tried other things like q-tips etc. to get a more penlike handling to make it more natural, and for some reason it doesn't register anything but my finger So some of the things are a little rough (and thus why I have had little success with the hair as noted in the Artist Comments).
There is a different alternative that may be done at this location: [link] which has a different dress decoration.

Thanks. I may be getting in over my head, but I want to do a rework of a dress that is in some stock photography, so let me give it a go, and I will message you if I need further help. THanks lots!
