Description
A successful search and rescue in deep space, following an accident. This was the last image I did for the Cyprian Rift: Warships project. It is posted here with permission.
I have a couple of gripes with it, but I'm glad that the S&R ship pictured was a lot better than the original idea I had.
At least this ship looks like a cross between the Raptor from BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and the UD-4L Dropship from ALIENS.
Enjoy and comment...

Yes, dropships need to be VTOL and rocket-packed, even when they are on SAR duty. I need to remember that for future designs
It is hard to draw something with the black of space for a background, but you seem to have mastered it. Well done! Any hints on how you would make a ship visible that has been painted black precisely to to provide space-camo?

Thanks!Β Ah, as for hints....the best thing that I can think of is to give the ship an outline--a "halo"--that represents the light coming from a nearby star or stars.Β Or perhaps show the ship with a nebula in the background.Β
If you can, check out the space scenes from the recent BATTLESTAR GALACTICA reboot--they did an amazing job with their space shots, including those involving an all-black "stealth" fighter, the Blackbird.Β

Hah! Oh man, my mistake. Ahhh...no, it isn't a Viper, but....I could have had an image of one in my head when I drew the wrecked vessel.
At any rate, it's a one-man craft, maybe similar in size to Viper (mebbe a Mark II, perhaps?).

Ah....a BG fan. Nice!
It isn't a Viper, but it's a ship that's "kludged" together based on the design of the Raptor and the Dropship from ALIENS (one of my favorite vehicles from SF films).
And the "new" BG will always rule.

I love to roll play and I'll have to look up the game. I think this was a very successful picture and represents search and rescue very well in space.

Hey, thanks! Another image, "Captain's Orders" (this one: [link] ) was also for that game. There are still tweaks being done to it, but you can always look at Dark Nebula's site.

Heh heh...thanks much, but if you really want to see some knockout space stuff, check out Syd Mead's work, and also Peter Elson, Jim Burns, Hidetaka Tenjin and Chris Moore. Now those guys can _really_ rock out a space scene!
