My Toothless costume for Eurocosplay 2012. Just a picture to show what the whole costume looked like overall. I was one of the 2 British representitives (and I really like the British flag picture they took for that so I put it here too), and came 3rd overall in the competition, which I really wasn't expecting and made me very happy. ^^first photo is by Pouncy of DJC Photography, the rest were taken by doomiscool. ^^

What's the head made out of? Mine was made from fire foam with latex rubber on the outside so it wouldn't break. It was super heavy so next year ill edit it

The whole costume is made of various types of foam covered in a high-quality black faux fur. There is no one material used for the whole thing; but with any type of mascot costume/fursuit/character costumeΒ generally foams are used as the base to build up the shape.
Have you made any costumes before? If not, there are many good guides available online that explain the basics of fursuit/creature costume making if you want to attempt to make a costume of your own; I am a professional costume makerΒ soon to start a full-time jobΒ with a professional mascot-making company, so this is quite a high level costume andΒ includes many of the skills I have accumulated over the years I have been constructing this type of suit. As with all arts practice is the key to getting good - the materials are not as important as the methods; there is no right or wrong answer as to how to make things and there is a lot of room for flexibility depending on budget/time/available materials - but Toothless is foam-based as I specialize in costumes made this way.

He's small because I'm quite small myself. He ended up as more of a chibi/baby Toothless in the end.

This definitely has to be my favorite toothless quad and is definitely a huge inspiration to make one as well haha

I am seeing out of the mouth, but I wouldn't recommend doing this as vision is terrible (I was practically blind most of the time) and it could result in severe neck painΒ in a lot of peopleΒ (I can contort my spine and neck into a lot of odd positions that should be very uncomfortable and hold them safely for a long period of time without doing damage due to a combination of genetic and medical reasons). It was something I wanted to try out, but I will likely be doing vision through the neck in all my future quadsuits as this provides much better visibility and is a more comfortable and natural resting position for the neck and upper spine.

Oh wow, yeah I could definitely see how vision from the mouth would be much worse than through a little neck port. I really like the way that yours has a long neck, but not too long to the point where it looks floppy like some of the other ones I've seen.
Did you happen to have any wip pictures that you took while making this? I'd love to see how much foam you had to use on this guy and what that awesome tail looks like underneath the fabric!

That's so cute and it looks like it would actually be comfortable too! I like that the tail doesn't drag on the ground like some of the others I've seen.

By far the cutest Toothless quad I've seen! I thought you were a plushie for a second! Excellent work. What did you use as a base for the body suit? My twin ~Toriroz made a Toothless quad and with moving wings, the Mechanism was painful to wear with only a backpack support.

The body is just made of foam with the wings having a special harness inside the suit to hold them in place; the wings are just decorative they don't weigh too much. This means that comfort was not an issue, but I probably would have had similar problems if they had contained any kind of mechanism as it would have greatly added to the weight.
And yay for more Toothless cosplayers! Her toothless looks really nice, and it's great that she worked out how to get the wings to open and close. I thought about making moving wings but decided against it as I knew they would weigh more and I would have no safe way to operate them myself from inside the suit.

Yeah the weight was problematic but the worst part was the mech to close them died and I nearly flew away like a 10ft kite lol
Your Toothless looks so huggable. A lot better than the people who try to use non-elastic 'scale' material.

That is annoying... but at least if you had flown away you could have been 'the only Toothless costume that actually flies'! That would be pretty awesome. XD
It still looked really good, though, wing mechanism broken or not.
I love making huggable characters. If I saw Toothless in real life, Id want to hug him, and it'd be epic if he was actually soft and fluffy. ^^

I really wanted to make him with fur as he is such a cuddly character - it just seemed right.
There are some lovely Toothless costumes out there, but I'd never seen a fluffy one done before so thought I'd try it myself and am glad it worked.
