Description
This may or may not be my most controversial piece yet due to it's the underlying subject matter. For those that don't know, this is Sunflower. She was a deleted character from the classic Disney film, Fantasia. Throughout the Pastoral Symphony sequence, in which she appears in. She is portrayed to be a small black centaur who is a servant under the rest of the centaurs.
Most prints of this film since the 1960s, have removed her due to her appearance as a racial stereotype. And even then she's rarely acknowledged at all, even to this day.
So, I wanted to see if I could take a negative situation and turn it into a positive. If I could turn Sunflower from less of a caricature, and more of a character.
I've seen a few other artists on this site redesign her to where she looks more like the rest of pretty centaurs in the Pastoral Symphony sequence. But I wanted do something a little different.
I wanted Sunflower to retain a cute but cartoony design, but one that's more flattering.
This one took a long time to do. Not only in just organizing the entire composition but even organizing the colors so that they made fit with one another.
This was done with a mixture of both Prismacolor and Marco Renoir pencils. It was my first time trying the latter brand. They worked great with the Prismacolors.

Thanks so much! I really do appreciate this well written and thoughtful review. Yeah, that dotted line is most likely from the edge in my sketchbook. I must have overlooked it when I was cropping the scan of this piece. That and coloring the whole thing in!
What was the hardest bit for you?:
It had to be the background. I went through so many different rough drafts on how I wanted it to look. I wanted it to be vibrant and full of life without overshadowing Sunflower herself.
How did you blend the colored pencil so smoothly?
Lots of light and delicate layers. I always build up my colors slowly in order to get a nice consistent blend of color. Also to help get a good blend, I occasionally use a colorless blender for larger areas. It's a bit tedious, but rewarding in the long run.
Do you believe that Sunflower deserved to be censored?
No. While Fantasia is a beautiful film, it is a product of its time. While I don't approve of such a racial caricature, people should be able to see this movie in an unaltered format in order to understand the historic context behind it, and know why it's not acceptable today. Part of making progress is being able to face your past and learn from it, rather than pretending it never happened.
Also, side question... Have you ever heard of Kara Walker?
I have not to be honest.

Sunflower in the movie was so racist when it was designed, you made it look a lot better.

This is very well done! I had not known about Sunflower before reading your description and had to look her up. Your representation is much better! I like your choice to keep her cuter, more cartoon-ish style. From your picture, she DOES seem more of a character with a story rather than a caricature of the time. Very nice background work, too! Your hard work in choosing colours and organising the composition definitely paid off.

Good for you!Β
I've seen the deleted sequences, and they call upon the popular stereotypes of the day.Β Had Sunflower been a Japanese, Chinese, or Filipino character in a Greek mythos world, her portrayal would have been just as stereotyped as the maidservant character she was.Β Many old presentations do not meet the standards of today, but it's stupid and hubris to demand that they do.Β Tomorrow's viewers will look back on us an sneer just as much if their only measure is what's around them at the moment.
The absurdist humor of Coyote vs Roadrunner, Tom and Jerry, and many others have been decried in the 70s and 80s as a dangerously violent inspiration for our tender youth.Β Likewise, Barbie represented misogyny and hypersexualization, etc, etc.Β Times change and the past should be recognized for what it was, not what it wasn't.Β To bring a character from the past into an improved present is a valid celebration of her ever existing at all.Β Well done!

Yeah, I remember finding out about Sunflower back in 2000-something when I was in middle school. I really think as you said needs a makeover to show the dignity and appreciation she deserves. She should even get her own short to acknowledge her existence.Β

This is an interesting Story. Thanks for sharing it! Your Cartoon-style is really great and I love all the Details on this specific Picture! Well done! :-D ---- For some odd reason I especially like the sunbeam effect in the Background, where the bluish flowerfield is! :-D

Thank you! Getting the background to look right, especially that section, took a bit of time to figure out.

It's a shame that Disney would rather forget about these characters instead of updating them to the times.
I wonder what other characters could use more respectful makeovers without losing that bit of character they had.

This drawing is so adorable. I love the colors used here, and I also love the contrast of Sunflower in comparison to the scenery around her. The little fairies nipping at the flower bring it full circle!

Even though she was made as a racial caricature, I think she should be brought back but redesigned like how youβve portrayed her here. This is really nice!
