For: Hope you like it!!

Btw this is one of the prizes for the winners of this contest: Red Riding Hood Entries and winners

(the first portion of the journal is about the next contest, so scroll down for the Red Riding Hood stuff)

I donated headshots like these for all 3 winning places! nwn/~

man, I love painting eye details

Edit: made some adjustments on request! lightened the fur color, rounded off the cheek (the fluff made it look like she had a strong jawline)

God I absolutely adore the details you put into your work~
They always seem so real, even if the creature itself is like nothing you'd ever see.
I really admire that in artists, the ability to make something look real without it being a real creature. It's what I want to strive for someday~

Can you please make tutorial one day about eye detail?

I have one on the general anatomy of the eye Eye 'tutorial' or at least about how I interpret it to make it look interesting!

The rest is mostly all about the iris, and the best advice I can give is: remember that it usually looks like a network of fibers favim.com/orig/201105/16/blue-… and combine that knowledge with your current simplified style of eyes!

A simplified version of my kind of eye would look like this: Head2

A bright halfmoon right around the pupil, a semi-bright ring at the edge of the iris,, and the "fibers" are suggested by just adding dark dots in the middle / in the shape of an upside-down halfmoon.

But eyes can vary a lot, so you could apply this added texture to any kind of eye tutorial or light/dark pattern!

Yes! When you get more comfortable with rendering more details/textures, you can even go further and actually suggest the 3D depth of the fiber-net-stuff. But simply by understanding why and how something specific looks appealing, then even if it's not all detailed and rendered out, your drawing will still look right (the best way to check it, is to see if it looks good zoomed out)Β  - you've certainly seen those digital paintings that look like real-life photographies in their thumbnail/zoomed out? But upon looking closer it's obvious that it's digitally painted and very rough and messy actually? That's made by artists who are familiar with the basic building-blocks of color, shading, proportion, dimensional shapes etc and simply know where what needs to be placed for it to look believable.

So keep a lookout on how other artists render details like eyes, and you'll quickly collect various ideas on how you can make interesting-looking additions to your art!

What's the thing on her snout?

Remarin In reply to Generalender15 [2018-05-31 09:16:45 +0000 UTC]

It's one of those semi-transparent face-veil-thingies that you see on Arabian dancers, like sc01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1IM2ARFX…

As an animal artist that usually deals with non-clothed creatures, I do admit that my experience with rendering specific cloth textures in detail is very minimal :'I I felt that the job was done if I could achieve some sort of transparency-look

I bear no ill feelings ;> the contest gave me and many other people incentive to draw a type of artwork that can look really cool and can be very enjoyable to draw - I'm very glad I joined!

Also, a Deviantart contest can absolutely be judged on simply personal preference! And try seeing it from the other participants perspective,, if all contests were judged only on which art looks BESTEST 10/10 PERFECTED SKILL then anyone who is a bit insecure would possibly be at least slightly put off when seeing more experienced/popular artists joining the contest. (I've certainly been at that point myself, and it simply adds a slight motivation boost when you know you have a legit chance at winning something. Even if you usually try to avoid comparing yourself to others, you sometimes can't avoid that mindset)

The contest organizer liked those specific artworks the best, and those pieces fulfilled what they were looking for and I'm happy for them! On my side, I still got to draw something I've been wanted to try out for a long time!
