Shade's upbringing gives her some major problems expressing her love for another woman, yet they both know she "experiments" at night when she thinks Eli is sleeping. Eli gives her permission to do anything she wants, and won't force herself on Shade. She wants her love to be ready and to make that choice herself.

And Shade is probably worried about what happens if they return to Sanctuary, a religious colony with what sounds like strict rules. They are both very damaged people trying to find the best way through an impossible situation.
