An image like this is all about surface control. The original skin had a mess of ambient values linked to the material nodes I had to manually wipe out. Ambient in Poser-dom before SSS was a way to get the SSS glow to skin. Nowadays it's rarely used, but with older characters it loads, and characters glow in the dark like an orange neon sign. Your only option is to go node by node and wipe out the glow. I did manually add SSS to the skin though, to bring this up to a higher standard and to get that natural look.

I did use the ambient nodes to get that glow on the eyes, but it took some careful setting of materials and colors to get the right effect. Before, her eyes faded away, now they pop like there's some supernatural magic behind them. It is a very cool effect, and one you can really only do in sci-fi or fantasy images.

The rest, a very careful lighting rig, rim lighting, and an increased shadow map size for that shadow of her hand on her side. This is the sort of image where technical know-how can make it work together like magic. It is a very cool image, another I am extremely proud of.
