I've got to quit introducing characters in show entries out of the blue, but I'll break that habit another day. Introducing Max, the golden girl of CBEC!! Her story is pretty interesting if you care to read over her toyhouse page, and I'm hoping to do more with her soon.
Story:
Texas wasn't so far to travel when you had business in every part of the world, but it wasn't enough to make Max feel like she belonged there. She had a hard time feeling like she belonged anywhere, no matter where she traveled to. There was always the question of whether she really earned her right to be there, or if her father had merely bought her an invitation. There was only so much she could afford before she felt like a fake, and she knew others whispered the same rumors she feared about herself.
The charming part about Texas was that nobody knew who she was. Surely her appearance gave her away, but aside from being well-off, nobody could assume anything else about her. She was just another equestrian among many, and was thankful to be overlooked. Of course, it was a temporary solution. She could only tolerate her mother for about a month before her presence became suffocating, and the dry heat of Texas wasn't helping her breathe any easier. Still, it was a necessary break from the social stress she endured back home. Stepping away from it all helped her realize she had enough judgement to fear with dressage being her discipline of choice. Not to mention her parent's own expectations weighing on her. They were the harshest critics of them all, and maybe the reason she was drawn to dressage to begin with; at the very least, the pressure was familiar.
When she was called to perform her test, Max let her anxieties settle, and Bay followed her lead patiently. They were a relatively new pair, but Bay was an experienced horse, and adapted well to any rider with good aids. That fact made Max feel rather inadequate, like she was cheating with a horse she didn't train, and relying on her money to buy her talent. Unfortunately, she just wasn't suited for the alternative, and knew a green horse would only make her impatient. Bay was anything but green, and on the contrary highlighted her own flaws as a rider. While he readily performed flying lead changes, Max was still perfecting her core aids at the canter for simple lead changes. Which was something she was rather proud to show off in their novice test.
In spite of that pride, she was still running the numbers in her head before the judges could even mark them down. It was an old habit she used to compare how different the scores were when her father was around. She knew everything she'd done well and everything she'd done wrong by the end of it, and could only anticipate their honest feedback. Said anticipation was actually a relief compared to the alternative. With her father an ocean away, there was no being blindsided by a victory she didn't earn. This was an opportunity for her to finally be better. She only needed to make a genuine effort to know where she stood, and she'd take any criticism she earned with pride.
