you can also use the method that I use. I use the heads of eye pins by cutting off the extra wire but leave a little on so it helps to start it into the back of the clay when you push them half way in. then you put them in the oven to bake and when they're done you'll take them out, put a little super glue on them, and push them back in. that way they can be sewn on like buttons instead of glued on.

I'm born and raised in Germany, but my origins lie in Poland and we visit our relatives from time to time.

Wow!

How well do they hold up to general wear (cuddling etc)? I have to replace a plastic eye on a plush that my dog chewed up and the only way I can think of is with clay because of the special shape (it's this Delibird [link] ). I'm not sure I trust the type of Sculpey I have to not break when gently pressed on or something D:

The type of polymer clay you have to bake becomes plastic alike and is cuddle proof (but still not chewing dog proofed). Air drying model clay is porous, so better don't use this kind.

This looks very neat. ^^
I have a question though, the eyes there look paper thin o.o Are they paper thin?

Renegar-Kitsune In reply to MissVienna [2011-01-05 19:01:00 +0000 UTC]
No, they are actually pretty thick. In the middle they are around 0,5 cm thick

You might also be able to bake a small screw into the back of these, and then use a washer to make them stay, like true acrylic eyes (for all those commenting that they do not like glue).

can you use like clean nail polish to get the shine?

Renegar-Kitsune In reply to timber533 [2010-11-18 00:14:11 +0000 UTC]
The first time i wanted to lacquer something i used nail polish, too. At first it was ok, but after some time it got sticky and matt. I think nail polish isn't compounded to stay a long time on something.

Haha, it took me some time, too, to came up with this idea
I had the model clay since years, as well as a plush Argumon with eyes that look like the ones I make now. Someday I was just like ".... OH!"

I wanna start by saying my mind is blown. I'm just contemplating making this a hobby, but I'd not have thought of using clay at all. haha. But I have a few questions.
what kind of glue would you suggest using, and would it be beneficial to put a bunch of hash marks on the back like #s all on the back of the eye, to make it stick better and stronger?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Renegar-Kitsune In reply to Kad-the-Chameleon [2010-04-30 17:43:49 +0000 UTC]
I use superglue for it. It don't reek when dried and hold the glued parts at place no matter what. The problem is: it dries the moment you hold it to fabric! On the clay it is a pretty long time liquid but combinated with fabric, paper, tissues AND SKIN (!!) it gets hard and plastic alike so be carefull with it.
I have experience with cutting of fabric+clay of my fingers with a cutter. It is no fun...

It sounds it. but the effect is worth the pain, I think. 'cause it's quite brilliant. haha

daitoshi [2010-04-27 18:02:31 +0000 UTC]
Then how would you attach it to a plushie?
I never want to glue things, because the glue may give, or damage the fabric if I mess up.

Renegar-Kitsune In reply to daitoshi [2010-04-27 18:44:25 +0000 UTC]
Well, glueing is the methode I use.
You could try and make some kind of safety eyes out of them, or adding a wire ring at the back, like glas eyes for teddy bears have.

When you want a hard plastic alike endproduct you should use clay which can harden one way or another
btw, thanks!
