Description This is my Pegasus sculpture that I photo-shopped to remove the wings.  It is nearly impossible for me to judge proportion on a winged animal.  I always make the back extra long for a Pegasus, but add the wings and it will still look too short. Now the head looks too small. or too big. AUGH! I can't tell!

I like it better without wings. The shape of a horse's back is so nice.

The neck is kinda wrong, but I'll fix that.

This photo has a digital mane and tail. The real sculpture doesn't look this realistic!

Any chance this one could become a PYO? I would deff pay $$$ and buy multiple ones. Fairly certain many others would too. (Crosses fingers)

I still like her, seeing her again, better than many of your other beasties.  Why don't you cast her without wings and make her a paint-your-own?  I'd sure want one!

I don't know what to do with this horse. It is a a little too big and heavy to be a paint-your-own. I prefer to have PYOs be about squirrel sized, so they are cheaper for the painters to ship to other people. It is too complicated to cast, or be painted easily as a production piece... it is just a problematic item. I do those sometimes.

I like it better without the wings.  Why not make this one a separate sculpture?  (He's got a bit of a goose rump there; don't know if that's on purpose.)

Art of different mediums can cross over.  Try a drawing book that refers to horses and ponies.  Lee Hammond's books are pretty good and she has one on how to draw horses and ponies specifically.  That might help you figure out if you have your proportions on your equines the way you want them to be.    DeviantART is overloaded with horse and pony photos to refer to as well.

As far as the statue is concerned, it is lovely.  I see nothing wrong with it.

Looks good to me.  I was taught that the length of the head is usually the same as from withers to the bottom of the chest.  Have a look at www.modelhorsessalespages.com for ideas.  There are lots of amazing horse sculptors there.

He's got the proportions of an Andalusian, which tend toward large heads, long backs, and heavy set necks.  Same with some lines of Lipizzaners.  So IMO he looks fine, unless the head makes him look too forehand heavy when the wings are in place.

That is why I like Unicorns much better than Pegasus. Though according to people, it's impossible for any animal to have four legs and wings (so they justify Smaug's front legs being taken off), but I thought that's why they were fantasy and magical creatures? The impossible becomes possible! haha but I still like Unicorns better.

It has such a lovely form!  I do see what you mean about the head, I think in particular the snout is what is "biggish" but I wouldn't say freakishly biggish.

Oh.. I'm in love.  I collect horses, fantasy versions as well (models, chinas... far too many to count!) He looks very classical, as your other pegasi and unicorns do as well.   Ooh, you might be interested in this: muddyhoofprints.blogspot.com/2…

Not just the sculpture but the history as well.

When I first saw this in my deviations I thought it was a sculpt from a model horse artist! Then I realized it was from you and I wondered if you had ever made any plain horses like this, because you'd be a rock star at them. I guess they wouldn't be as popular as dragons though haha. This is really super gorgeous though!

Reptangle In reply to Falcolf [2014-01-14 19:11:57 +0000 UTC]

I have never made a plain 'ol horse.
I really don't try to make things perfectly realistic, so pesky details like exactly correct proportions, being specific to a breed and all that serious stuff gets brushed aside for -"eh, looks ok"
Let's see what the real horse artists can correct on it! I can see a few things myself .
I sculpted most of this horse from life, looking at three different real horses: A percheron, an Arab and a poa pony. Each one had different proportions!

Yeah, it does look short.
I was using dressage horses in this position as models, but this guy's head is tucked in pretty tight.

This actually looks like a very well-proportioned statue! I suppose the croup is a little long (that area between the hindquarters and the barrel of the stomach), but honestly I'm just being a picky equine person. Seriously, this is a fantastic job and I am envious of your sculpting skills here! Especially with those legs, which are gorgeous. And I'd say the head is just the right size, and very elegant!

Reptangle In reply to Moonafleet [2014-01-14 19:22:20 +0000 UTC]

Huh! I would say the head is too small.
It is funny,  I have noticed people base correct proportions on the horse they are familiar with. I had a friend who only had Tennisee Walkers all his life, every horse he drew looked exactly like a walker, with a high, small head. I usually drew round butted, chunky horses with big heads because we had a POA pony.
 Thank you!

Haha, I know exactly what you mean. I own a Morgan, and when free-drawing all of my horses look like Morgans with the short backs and thicker necks.

The back doesn't look too long to me.
Many horse sculptures end up with savagely short backs, so it's nice to see one that looks a bit more proportional.

I love equines so much. Their bodies are just so graceful... but that attitude!

A friend of mine recently bought a 5-year-old mare with dark brown mane, tail, and socks, and bright yellow body (think of Spirit from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron); gorgeous animal! But O-M-F-G does that girl think she got SWAGGA!!! it's just way to funny seeing her out in the pasture interacting with the other horses. She's more human- than equine-like in attitude. So cute!
