Description
Ok, what can I say? I’m back!!!Back and ready to present my latest TRADITIONAL piece of art: “Calamity Rising” – my first traditional piece in 2012!
Finally, I found time and inspiration to do a “scene” with landscape, wide angle and countless characters again.
Kyle and Reptile are standing on a high cliff… gazing down at a huge army of Barbarians. Will they be able to stop this army? The battle is about to begin…

I was already talking to various publishers... they agreed that my art is quite nice... but they weren't interested.
Well, nevermind.

Do female reptilians ever envy the males for having so many cool features? lol
Like, Reptile has tough scales, orange plate "armor" over his chest, larger muscles than the females, foot pads, big claws, and even blue "armor" on the front of his feet... if I've read this all correctly.

... useless to mention that female Reptilians are a lot bit smarter and much more social!
No, they don't envy the males. Every gender has special features - positive and less positive! ^_^
After all: females take care for reproduction = the future of the species!

I had no idea they were smarter than the males, really.
Yeah, the females would take care of reproduction, not that getting pregnant is a huge advantage. lol

Unfortunately, he's still off-line.
Additional note: I'm helping him with the new characters' chronicles, at first with a chubby Komodo dragon named Darwin; since I lack a map of post-apocalyptical Canada, I adapted certain environmental elements.

Always glad to see your traditional works, becouse it's how i know you the best.
Honestly i prefered this one without colour becouse somehow you've lost perspective here after colouring it even if the distant objects are less datiled. Still those brigtly yellow hills on the level of Kyle's arm somehow totally throw everything out of proportion, visually it's where the visibility should end, and becouse of that the barbarian horde looks like levitating in front of a mountain. Sorry but that's how i see it. and i can't understand why with everything beeing under the influence of that red/orange sun, the trees remian purely and so juicy green.
ah well, best if i show what i mean: [link]

Sorry, don't wanna spam here... ^^" But I see more and more after clicking at your link again.
I think, I can really benefit from this... yeah. I wanted mylight source (sun) to be more at the LEFT side of the scene. But right now, as it is, the far distance mountains SHOULD BE THE BRIGHTEST ONES!
I'm sure this will help me next time I do such landscape shots.

Hey, I misunderstood the part with the "hills next to Kyle's arm".
I understand it now, you weren't referring the the highlights, but the composition of the canyon/landscape itself!
Thanks again for the link, that looks much stronger.
But well, it's done... ^^" And I still love it, 'cause it's handmade and pushes my story!

ReptileCynrik In reply to Herisheft [2012-02-22 12:20:57 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the input here!
As a matter of fact, I think the BEST part - talking about perspective here - would be the soft mountains/hills in the far horizon. Won't you agree? Maybe, I should've used MORE soft pencils and even less line art.
I do like the colouring, though it's quite strong... maybe too strong in some places. The original art is much softer!
After all, I know how much you prefer "monochrome" art and I think... you also love my INK style. That's why you may also prefer my LINE ART pictures, hehehe.
But that's alright.
Maybe, I should also try less "yellow-serving-as-highlight" colour on characters... yeah, that's a suggestion I can use!
The "green" bushes are - like I said to Teivos before - totally different in original. The colour contrast is not really welcome but I didn't see it as horrible.
You know... if this would've been a DIGITAL artwork, I would have placed a colour layer on top of everything... giving it a reddish tone. But that's really difficult with traditional media. I need to practise more about this!
THANKS a lot for the link!! I do understand what you mean with the army being "too high" here. In your version, I really like the effect that KYLE and REPTILE are indeed standing way higher than before. Also, the army looks like if walking through a canyon of some sort.
In my version, I wanted the army to be "just far away"... and not "deep below". BUT I admit that your idea has more strenght and power - from a compositional point of view.
Of course, I should've thought about THAT in my sketchwork... and not lateron. ^^"
But see, even I can learn.
And other people usually see MORE than meets MY eye..............
Thank you, hun.
CU ^^

Well, i totally understand that you wnated to make it look disatnt, but those rocks in the trees already make a impression of something really distatnt. You can see that by covering the mountain with the army, you get a very wide perspective mountain view, and then suddenly there is this smoothed mountain and all over it quite big sylhuettes, and bam, something goes of with everything here. It's like landscape rolled itself towards Reptile and Kyle.
As for the foliage maby try to use yellow or ornage as base next time and just operate the green in shadowed places? It'a always a good method by many comic artists to make a quick undetailed sketch of the panel which they want to color and then make a tryout of colours. It's what Guarnido does, and we all know how great he is with colours
If you amnage, i recommend you this album, it's great, and it shows each apge of Blacksad in the making along with author's commentaries.

And I'm sure your link/suggestion will help for next time!
And no, I didn't take it the wrong way. After all, I enjoy if good friends and fellow artists give me founded, well-written and constructive critique.
AND with the suggestion in your link, it was all so clean to me! ^^

Well, always a good idea is tolook at the picture in the mirror or look at it after a few days. Usually it's then when we see mistakes etc.

ReptileCynrik In reply to Herisheft [2012-02-22 17:36:33 +0000 UTC]
Oh, btw... the picture looks quite cool, if mirrored! ^^" (But it wouldn't be a typical wallpaper then, would it? Ha, ha...)
Well, in my version it's a rather flat landscape... wide and less deep.
In your suggestions, it's a real deep canyon, quite the gorge in a mass of stones! ^_^ Thankies
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Herisheft In reply to ReptileCynrik [2012-02-22 20:39:05 +0000 UTC]
Well i thought that this was your intention with the canion since they walk over the hill's side, or at least it looks like you wnated to do that. OR like the trees are in the gorge and they walk over the side of the cliff locked with a rocky hill on the side, so they have to go over it's edge.
Seriouslly, i see the great plain but over the hill next to which they are walking and from this point of view it would be impossible to see them. also they sylhuettes are quite big so they can't be that far as well.
but there you go a great plain: [link]
and what i meant earlier: [link]
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ReptileCynrik In reply to Herisheft [2012-02-23 13:20:21 +0000 UTC]
The "great plain" is ok, but very boring... ^^" It's not intersting, except if I multiply my army by four!! Also, there isn't a large, vast desert field that should be filled with people. I wanted it to be small and tight, yepp!
I know what you meant earlier about the "bright mountains should be the very last horizon line".
Your very first link is still the best, though. ^____^
Thanks for all!!! It has opened my mind and eyes for the next time.
After all... hey, how long has it been that I drew a wide-shot landscape?? IN TRADITIONAL MEDIA, whatsoever???
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Herisheft In reply to ReptileCynrik [2012-02-24 01:30:51 +0000 UTC]
Then you wnated an open space or tight canyon? I don't understand anything anymore
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ReptileCynrik In reply to Herisheft [2012-02-24 12:11:41 +0000 UTC]
No, I wanted some sort of a "canyon". I don't like these very flat, wide fields... like the fields of "Pelennor" (LORD OF THE RINGS-RETURN OF THE KING)!
But it was not supposed to be VERY deep. The mountain walls were supposed to be 20-30 meters in heigt... not much more.
But like I said: IF I was to draw my artwork completely AGAIN, I would use your very first link/suggestion!!! ^__^
This was still the best version, after all.

Oh, hun! One more addition here to make my point clear:
When I said "Well, in my version it's a rather flat landscape... wide and less deep." I just made a STATEMENT!! ^^" This wasn't meant to express how I WANTED my picture to be... but how it IS right now.
Final words:
I indeed wanted to draw some sort of "rather flat canyon"... yeah, quite unusual.
But I think I got lots of new ideas now... thanks to you, too.

ReptileCynrik In reply to Herisheft [2012-02-25 17:09:39 +0000 UTC]
Naaah, I wanted a canyon, but not a very deeeeep one! ^^" Anyway, it should be adviseable to close the discussion about this aspect here.
It's been very nice talking to you again and... I really appreciate your input and advise here.
THANKS, hun.

You did the best in colouring the artwork . I admire this picture (even the sketches you did ^^) , the scene of Reptile and Kyle in the landscape of enemy hordes under the tangerine sunset.
Great job with the picture based on your story. I wish I, too, want to do my pictures based on "Birth of the Shivanian Heroes".
