So do you still need to use the geometry helper morphs for thighs, hip, etc?

RetroDevil In reply to gishzida [2012-01-27 11:15:27 +0000 UTC]

Not really. It is kind of built in already as the nature of weight mapping. It might not be as effective as say the "perfect booty" morphs just recently released. I will have to experient and see.

I may post this same pose with both V4 and V4-WM and see the differences.

I don't yet own PoserPro 2012 [Underemployment has its disadvantages ] so it's kind of moot for me but I am curious to learn what is so "special" about WM so I know what to expect when I can afford it... From the looks of the scene posted, if it was done without the Xameva injection, the model looks awfully good at the hips and thighs in terms of the default V4 distortions.

I kinda wonder how DAZ feels about the free WM injector for V4, after all that "eats" one of their potential revenue streams and DAZ has become very interested of late in monetizing their products via their customers wallets.

Weight mapping basically uses a system that smooths the mash based on an image map(I think). It does almost the same thing as the helper morphs.

here is a test I just made comapering standard v4 and Weight mapped.

[link]

I loaded exactly the same preset morph for both.

I don't know what DAZ thinks.. I guess it is simmilar to them not realeasing all of those helper morphs at Renderosity.. really that sort of thing should have come from DAZ but they never did. The weight mapped version uses a script to inject the weight mapped skeleton into v4.

I suppose they think everyone is going to buy all of the things needed to get Victoria 5... With the WM injection there is no compelling reason to go to V5

As I tried to explain it in a forum post @ DAZ, I [as a poser user] would have to spend $500 for morphs, software and plugins to get the same features shipped in PP2012 which the upgrade only costs $200...

Alas all of the DS users thought I was daft because "DS is free..." until you start adding lights, animation, dynamic cloth, a decent render engine, morph and rigging tools which they seem to have forgotten all of those incremental costs. Yep DS is "free and feature complete" like a two room flat is a place to live just like Buckingham Palace.

That's not to say Poser hasn't got it's issues

o Why doesn't Firefly use the GPU for rendering? Even my 4 year old Nvidia 8500GT has 16 stream engines now low end cards have 96! but PP2010 does not use the GPU for the render instead you are limited by the number of cores in your CPU... [I haven't seen anything in the PP2012 specs that changes this]GPUs are faster than CPUs for rendering.
o Why don't they make it easier to use external render engines [Lux or others]?
o Why is the working area of Poser ~100M rather than 1000 or 30000 [CPUs and GPUs are a lot faster than when Poser was created]

Ack! the self-starting grumbler has started...

I agree with all of your points. I got daz 3 pro for free years back but since then all of the features/plugins don't work on the newer versions without paid upgrades. It was cheaper for me to buy poser pro 2012 update than than to update all the plugins to daz studio 4.

I was hping for GPU rendering in Pro 2012 but it never came I am very happy with the SSS update and weight mapping is now a useful thing but I wish they updated more with each version. Compared to other 3d apps rendering it is well behind. A proper Lux plugin would be very very cool for the next update.

Considering Baggins Bill was one of the original contributors to Poser2Lux one wonders... About the only thing they seem to have added is turning ambient light in textures into full blown light emitters.

You'd think SmithMicro would buy Studio GPU who made Mach Studio [link] before Autodesk does

RetroDevil In reply to gishzida [2012-01-27 14:40:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah.. Good point on the lux render thing. I never got that working but it was half way there LOL I am sure it will be included at some point

That Studio GPU would be a good thing for Smith Micro to aquire too.. a choice of renderers would be great

The light emitting objects aint that great really. It works but I always get black blotches everywhere.. I suppose I should find out why and try and fix it really LOL

Go and follow Baggins Bill's VSS and IBL threads on the RMP forums... BB is obsessed with "realism" [Poser as a camera rather than Poser as a coloring book of plastic dolls]

I vaguely recall that the "black rot" has something to do with AO settings and IBL... to quote from one of the BB threads where I was the victim "If you see black splotches, increase the ray bias." [link]

I took quite a newbie beating in that thread--- I hope you learn from my errors

RetroDevil In reply to gishzida [2012-01-27 20:56:46 +0000 UTC]

That's a good Idea. I hadn't really had much time since getting 2012.. I was looking into SSS for a while LOL. BB helped out with his threads on that

I will check the ray bias thing out.. I suspected it would be something to do with ray bounces or something but was a little wary about upping them because of the render times. LOL

LOL @Newbie beating.. I still avoid renderosity forums because I was ripped apart there when I first started with Poser. Now If I ask a question I completely ignore anything that isn't actually answering my question LOL

I've had a terrible time with the hair and clothes, but then again I don't use many clothes in my work

With hair I figured you can use Menu>figure>copy joint zones from.. and chose your v4wm figure. It kind of works for clothes until you move the figure LOL
