Description
This is a very old piece I did. a vain attempt to visualise the interior of a Dysons Sphere. An artificially created shell completely enclosing a Star (preferably a G0 type). the inner surface of the shell would be at a distance of 1 astronimical unit (Earth to the Sun = 1AU) from the star and be used as habitation. This also can be used to trap 100% of the stars energy output (if your not living in it and thus needing to let light n heat through to the living spaces).Needless to say. The habitable area is HUGE, around the area of a billion Earths.

Hey, I tried to draw a Dyson's Sphere last week, but wasn't happy with the result and abondoned the whole idea.
The idea is interesting, however, but not very realistic, considering the ENORMOUS amounts of materials the spere would require... But perhaps something akin to Larry Niven's "Ringworld" could be constructed by non-godlike beings...

Actually, when doing the research for my pic. I found an amazing amount of egghead-data on "how-to". Seems is would take only a Jupitarian size planets mass, converted somehow, to encircle the sun at 1AU with a meter thick shell. Hard to wrap my mind around the math used to determine that. But even is only 10% true. you'de only need to strip 1 or two systems to build a decent Dysons sphere. Mostly the eggheads seemed to think the gravity stresses would be insurmountable, can't rotate it like a ringworld to stablise it. Wierd how they can totally think matter conversion was easy, but contra-gravity was impossible....:confusion:
Your Futureistic Society in your story could build one easily General. You've given them all the needed tools in your nanites.

A ringworld, yes, but not a Dyson's Sphere. Constructing a DS would be kinda unpractical anyway, as it is impossible to stabilize one or provide it with gravity (I have no articifial gravity in my stories)... And a meter-thick Sphere is only the top of the iceberg: it would require soil and buildings and athmospehre etc. to actually be habitable, at least tripling the matter-cost... And personally, I think that there's no way one meter-thickness could be enough for a superstructure like a DS. One kilometer or at least a hundred meters or so is much more realistic.

Well, look er up amigo. I was pretty surprised at how much info was available on such an esoteric subject. Though I did figure out that most professional Eggheads do not read sci-fi. They have a super narrow and unimaginitive view of future advances.

Hmm... Do you have a link to that info?

I did that pic over 3 years ago. But I sort of remember how I got around with the search. So I'll try and retrace my steps and note you some links amigo
Might be able to do that tomorrow. Slap me if I forget! Got to much family here. but I would like to look it all up even for my own refresher ;D

Thanks Amigo, I had a simple terrain generator and so the oceans are the wrong color. But DMaland has me interested in this again with his 'Unified Design' Piece [link]
So I might try and get it right

So this would completely 'enclose' a star?? That's pretty wild..

Yes, At the same distance as the earths orbit. Thus, technically, wherever you looked from inside. It would just appear to be an infinite flat plain dissappearing into the distance.
I was trying to capture that. But my skills then (and now perhaps) were not up to the task.

To create an image of such a thing you'd have to really have some calculation of the curvature of the plain --- as for example the horizon on earth is 'fairly rounded' going 'downward' as seen from center when not turning to look that direction... this plane would be the opposite and on a massive scale, I would wonder it the curvature would even be percieved by the human eye... also, our earth actually has a horizon, whereas this creation would not have a horizon at all, in any direction...

See, your starting to catch on to the impossibility of representing such a construct with accuracy. I can see your mind starting to wrap itself around the magnatude of the numbers even now. It did that to me when I began the research into it.
I did all the calculations way back. Might even be around in my files somewhere.
BUT! good news. for anyone ever wanting to make an art piece with a Dysons Sphere. That you can build one pretty small too. One around Jupiter size would be fine if you had a mechanism to feed hydrogen feul to the baby sun at it's core. I did find out some fascinating theories during my research for this pic.

That would still be VERY LARGE...
