Requested guide from fans of the anime eyes/mouths/expressions. However unlike those, this is completely mine, not a forced sketch from class. I used absolutely no reference for this piece, it is all from in my head.
I impressed myself to be honest.
Anyway, some notes about drawing a male ... if you only like drawing girly guys or skinny guys this probably isn't for you. Can you tell I like muscles?

So.
The scan kind of sucks so bear with me here on the scaling markers.

The head is marked x, notice that the figure is 7x tall. This is generally accepted for anime, however for children, do not apply this rule. I believe realism is 8x.

The body is extremely proportionate! We are perfectly mathematic. Notice the y and z markers.

The arm bones are the same length (not including shoulder and hand). Bend your arm. You'll find your wrist comes up to your armpit. Also. See how your elbow jams into your waist? A good rule is to line the belly button with the elbow. I have found from observation that male's arms tend to look shorter because the female center of gravity is lower.

Now kneel and sit on your heels and that explains z in full detail. You are sitting on your heels because your leg bones are the same length. Be sure to watch the tapering of the joints, it helps from making people look like they have boards for limbs.

I guess on to the body. Men have kind of an upside-down triangle shape. Giving them broad shoulders helps steer them away from the girly-shape. For men, their hips should not be the same as their shoulders. Let the line drop evenly and it will keep your man from having a sensual womanly curve. We don't want that. Well maybe you do. I don't! haha!

Oh! Important to note. The legs make up the majority of the body at 4x length. Try not to make the torso longer than two. Mmm...another neat fact is if you hold your arms out like a T that length is idential to your height! Not that this applies to anime, because they usually have small hands/feet, but for something cool put your foot between your elbow and wrist. It fits perfect! Bet you didn't think your foot was that big!

I've rambled on and on. I have trouble with feet - but I think redrawing these ones 10 times made them turn out okay. For hands, make sure the palm is kind of a pentagon shape. The fingers sit on a curve, and the thumb is quite far down in comparison. For those, I urge you, practice practice!

Later!!!

humm...maybe i should join drawing class too...
but how do you know which ones to join? there's a bunch out there too. So isnt that the hard part? figuring out which one to join?

Mine came with the game design course. Life drawing is the class I took, and then character design followed. That one was fun, while the first was more essential.
