Two more to go

Cave Divers:

Rhoda

It had probably been a silly idea. But they had so many of those! And most of the time they worked out fine! Most of the time.

Rhoda watched her skinny forelegs dangle over the cavernous stony expanse below. It was a unique sensation. She wasn't used to being suspended in the air. Or rather, partially suspended. One moment she’d been bouncing and leaping about, quick as a wink, across the honeycomb of caves she and Rin had discovered the other day. Then next, on half a jest, half a challenge, she’d gone diving through the very stone with her magic.

The idea was that she would bound right through, like a fish splashing above a stream before returning to it’s natural environment. Except she’d panicked when her whole head was enclosed in dark earth. Instead of slipping through, Rhoda ended up frozen halfway.

And speaking of freezing, there was a cold breeze riding along her backside in a particularly rude fashion. She felt the chill wind fluttering her tail. Ugh. Winter.

“What a sight we must be!” She called down to Rin where he was standing below. Rho grinned ruefully down at the dark stag. It wasn’t often she had a view of her friend from above, and his antlers made interesting patterns from this angle. That was something new at least.

“I think we both learned some things here today?” She offered.

Rin

Rin snorted hard, sighing deeply and rolling his eyes towards the sky.

Earran give me strength

‘‘Oh. Do you think? Have we? Have we learned something, dearest, darling doe? HAVE WE?!’’

Despite the stern telling off he’d have liked to have given his reckless friend, it was hard to keep the humour down as he watched her pale legs paddle uselessly in mid air. Although he’d like his heart to stop pounding quite so hard, it had been a uniquely terrifying experience to watch Rho melt with the earth.

“Tell me, dearest one” he continued, voice practically dripping with wry politeness, staring up at the gently flailing legs, “has one considered how one might be getting oneself out? I assume one doesn’t intend to stay dangling in the sky like some sort of deranged birds nest?”

He blinked sweetly up at his friend, head to one side, the very picture of innocence. If he were honest with himself, he was ever so slightly envious of how quickly Rhoda seemed to have picked up earth shaping, and trying to pass through rock was something he wouldn’t have considered himself.

Still, it wouldn’t be the same without at least one of them doing something reckless. For once, it wasn’t him. He intended to milk it for all it was worth.

Rhoda

Rhoda winced at Rin’s acerbic replied. She favored him with a sheepish smile. Getting out of this was going to be… a challenge. While part of her would normally rise to Rin’s baiting and reply in an equally joking manner, looking down at him from so high up was becoming a little disconcerting. Her stomach rolled uncomfortably in its earthen tunnel.

“Y-yes, I think I would like to get down from here please.” She said nervously. “I'm just, uh, not-t totally sure, er, HOW, exactly, to d-do so.”

Oh great. Her old stammer was back.

Rin

His expression softened, seeing Rhoda rattled was an uncommon experience, and not one he was particularly comfortable with.

“Hey. Don’t worry Rho, we’ll think of something. As much as I enjoy being able to win any conversation just by walking away a few steps, it gets boring talking to yourself after a while. Just let me think for a minute.” He smiled reassuringly at the prone doe, hoping she could see it from that high up.

“If I can figure out how she did that in the first place…” he muttered to himself, turning his attention to the solid rock in front of him. He didn’t want her to complete the jump...she’d just fall straight down… Turning his mind into the calm, meditative state he’d developed to make using his magic easier, he placed a hoof onto a jutting piece and pondered the makeup of the cliff face in a detached way.

He’d learnt from a Windborne traveller that sand was made from ground rock, so essentially, rock was just solid sand? You could move through sand quite easily...all the little bits moved around you, especially with a little bit of pressure...Oh.

Oh dear.

The weird sensation he’d been feeling in his leg had been it sinking into the stone. Funnily enough, just like it would through sand. He tugged a little bit. Nope. Nothing. Detached state was giving way to mild panic and huge embarrassment.

“Rho?” He called, voice wavering slightly, “ I think I have an idea about how you can get down. If you can find a way to melt yourself down through the rock, a bit like digging through sand, we can probably pull you out from the ground.”

He looked at his foot.

“Just don’t sink too far, I don’t think I can pull five legs out…”

Rhoda

Rhoda heard the thread of concern in Rin’s voice when he replied. She winced again, this time internally. Now she'd gone and made him feel worried about her.

She caught sight of his reassuring smile and offered him a wobbly one of her own. This had been a very silly idea. Dwelling on it wouldn't solve the problem though.

Rin was talking to himself under his breath. Rho pricked her ears forward, trying to catch his words. What was he doing with that one hoof-

The limb in question sunk into the rock before him. Her eyes widened. Rho had better appreciation for that little gasp Rin had tried to cover up when she first jumped into the stone. Watching this kind of magic was just WEIRD.

Rin seemed to come back to himself and discover his leg’s predicament. She watched him stiffen and try to tug himself out of the earth. No good. Now it was his turn to get stuck!

Rhoda heard the catch in his voice when he spoke again, and she bit back the laughter that had been bubbling in her throat. Rin deserved better treatment than his friend laughing like a nervous mocking bird from above. Like moving through sand, huh?

“Well you've had plenty of experience playing in the sand!” She quipped lightly. “I should think you feel right at home!”

Rhoda focused on taking even breaths. She reached for the feeling of her magic, that familiar hum of energy that felt so much like a honeybee’s wings beating all through her veins. And then she let the buzz expand outwards in gentle tendrils. When she thought about digging in sand, all she could picture was that trip they'd taken to the beach.

Maybe she could… Swim through the stone? As if she was surrounded by a dried up mud puddle and her magic would be like rain, loosening the grains of earth. Carefully, she allowed the stone under her to soften. Her body gradually descended into the softened path her magic made. It was slow going, but it was progress.

“Hey I think I've got the trick of it!” She said with barely contained excitement as she sank closer to Rin. “It's like.. Wading in mud! Or swimming in a silty pond! Just have to be wary of -Oof!- hidden debris.”

There was a denser stone mixed into the makeup of the cavern pillar she was stuck through. While the rocks higher up had softened with just a little persuasion, this bottom section was more stubborn. Rhoda felt a wide, flat piece of the harder earth against her ribs. If she could only bring her hind legs through the pillar maybe she could-

Rhoda’s back end slipped into the soft earth without a second thought. She felt the denser rock under her hind limbs, and pushed forward. Her front was still a little ways from the ground, but it wasn't the worst height she'd leapt down.

Rhoda lurched out of the pillar. She squeaked in surprise. The stone made a grating, burping noise as it closed behind her. So much for a leap, her final descent was more of a tumble! Rho landed in an graceless heap near Rin. Thank goodness she hadn't landed ON him.

“So!” She said brightly as she drew herself up on scraped knees and a smarting chin, “Let’s never do that again!”

Rin

Plenty of experience? “That’s the last time I’ll be nice to you in your hour of need, horrible doe!” He shouted back with laughter in his voice, relieved to see her spirits pick up again.

It was slightly disconcerting seeing Rhoda slowly ooze towards him, although the expression of concentration was priceless. Keeping one eye on her slow, but steady descent, he began trying to loosen himself from his own trap.

Eventually, he was able to soften the stone around his hoof just enough to tug it free, leaving him with a few slight scrapes. It took far longer than he'd expected, but eventually he was free. He resisted the urge to blow a raspberry at the offending rock.

Just.

He turned back in time to see Rho deposited onto the ground in front of him, almost in slow motion as she fought herself free, ending up in a tangle of limbs and hair. He waited a second, making sure she was unharmed, before flourishing a bow and declaring loudly,  “Welcome to the world! Oh strange and glorious earth child! How might such a lowly, mortal creature, such as myself, be of service to you, oh lady of rock and stone?”

Narrowly avoiding a swot from Rho’s tail, he stepped out of reach, throwing his head back and continuing his oration, backing away all the while.

“I am not worthy to gaze upon your birth from stone! Mine eyes shall never see a more beautiful and graceful sight! WOE, woe upon me, for never shall I experience such majesty again. WOE!”

He agreed wholeheartedly that it was probably best not to do that again, although he had to do it from a distance...quite a distance..
