This took me forever to finish! I must say I'm pleased with the results on this one. Drawing humans isn't exactly my strong side so i decided to work more on that. I guess i got a little carried away with the background but i wanted it to fit in well with the style of the soldier so i had to keep it in the same level of detail. Full view is recommended! What we got here is a modern Soldier, modern arms, armor, making an impression of being ready for battle. ready for battle. Kneeing on the ground and looking off frame, showing no emotion whatsoever, he looks like being at combat.
VISION
The Vision is great. The Soldier is nice to look at, you get the message of this picture, and it can make you think about war and the danger this soldier is in. Even though I find it odd that the soldier isnt clothed matching to his surroundings during a night mission, I love it, 5 Stars.
ORIGINALITY
Well, it is a soldier in a forest. Nothing that would knock you off your feet. But as the weapon and the armoring look authentic, the forest gives it a nice touch. 3 Stars.
TECHNIQUE
The Technique is simple, but effective. Nothing that would surprise, but it isn't annoying, but fits the atmosphere this picture aims at prefectly. 4 and a half Stars.
IMPACT
Well, the Impact is like the Originality, right? It's a soldier in a forest. But if you do think about the picture, just sit back and not rush over it, it can still make you think. It isn't that great at giving a specific message though - like how dangerous, glorious, deadly, useless or whatever war is. That is an up- and a downsite to the picture, given to the viewer the freedom to decide for himself. I can give 4 Stars here.
CONCLUSION
If you came for a modern soldier, you got a modern soldier, a very good picture. If you take your time to think about it, it is a very deep and therefore even greater picture. If you just came across this picture like I did, you should take your time to look at it and get yourself an opinion about it and its message.

Very nice. The rifle strikes me as distinctly european. o: Very nice, beats the M-4s in use here...neh, military-industrial politics will keep that thing in use long after even little kids have better weapons. XD;

The level of detail blew me away, the bark on the tree, the toning on the foliage, I mean you've even put shadows on the creases of the guys uniform.
I just have one gripe and it has nothing to do with your drawing ability but where is the clip on that rifle?
Oh and of your want to do something like this again you could try mud on boots and knees

The bark of the trees right behind the soldier seems just a bit too crisp and in focus, though, detracts a bit from the subject. Also his eye seems a bit flat in comparison to the rest of the painting, I suspect it needs a bit more strategic shadowing! As, possibly, does his right hand (right below the gun) and some other parts - helm, pouches at waist, and such. Wait at first I figured the waistpouches should be under the shadow of his right arm, and then I realized I wasn't sure where his elbow was, lol.
All the same, especially for something out of your usual subjects, I salute you for a painting well executed!
