The dividing line between North Vietnam and South Vietnam as established by the 1954 Geneva Conference. The 17th parallel was buffered by a demilitarized zone, or DMZ, between the two countries.
It is only understandable as this dividing line of a paramount importance in establishing the region history somehow similar to the 38th parallel in Korea dividing the North from the South of this country or the Berlin Wall dividing between EAST and WEST ...

One of the most impressive impacts got during our trip in Vietnam relates to the political identification of the guides due to the bloody division between the communist North and the pro-American capitalist South during the war. Even now more than forty years after unification the traces of the history are omni-present and sometimes quite pregnant in the guides behavior. Therefore, we have clearly and easily identified the "origin" of our guides ...
The first one in the North was a kind of typical communist who declaiming the text learned by-heart like a communist propaganda lesson. The guide accompanying us in the South was precisely the opposite ... "free" and openly against the "imposed history" by the victorious North. Interesting was the story related to the guide in the "central" area (around the 17th parallel North) who appears in this photo and who presented us his family history split between the US where part of the family managed to run away and the rest of it remaining in Vietnam.
