Description
Edit: 3/4/12 Kittysaysmeow-WQ had a slight problem using the render/light effects on Photoshop Cs5,using a Mac Os. To fix this problem you have to run Cs5 in 32 bit mode, kinda funny because I don't have this problem on a PC,but here are the stepsStep 1. Go to your finder menu and click on go.
Step 2. Click on Applications.
Step 3. Click on PhotoshopCs5 folder, then right click on adobephotoshopcs5.app then select get info.
Step 4. After the get info menu box opens select the general tab to expand it and you should see a box that says Open in 32 bit mode.Check it and this should fix your problem. Uncheck it to go back to 64 bit mode.
Or you can follow this link for another method, but I was told the above steps are more common.[link]
other features that don't run in 64 bit mode on Mac are....
Lighting Effects
Extract (Use Refine Mask under the Selection menu)
Variations
TWAIN (support works on some scanners)
Video Frames to Layers
Video Preview
Send Video Preview to Device
FireWire
FireWire DLL
Legacy Droplets
Edit: Phattyartist picked up on something I failed to mention. For those of you who are having trouble with the lighting effects render.(You Have To Be In RGB Mode, 8 Bits Per Channel,Sorry For Any Inconvenience This May Have Caused.)

really interesting tutorial. I love to see how these build up from just a few smudges and brush marks to being a really heavily textured and detailed piece. well done

This is a really helpful tuorial! Although it would help 3D Game artists like myself a little more if you could show a way to make it completely seamless.
Nevertheless, it's a really well done tutorial!

nice break down, the more steps in a how to the better. a lot of times people skip things that are obvious to people who are trained but not intuitive to newbies

That's pretty cool, though, I don't have Photoshop or other unique tools.
I'll stick with hand painting my own rocks if it comes down to it.

I've still having trouble with the lighting effects render. I've checked the mode and the 8 bits per channel part but it still is not there. I have CS5 if that makes any difference.
Thanks for making this tutorial, I'm sure it will be very helpful. xD

I apologize for the lengthy description and for the tutorial not working for you,I am not a Mac user,I wish I was Lol but this should fix the problem.let me know if this works so I can make an edit in case others are having the same issue.
Alright,so my understanding is mac dose not allow some of CS5 rendering features to work because the 64 bit program is not completely compatible with some of the features in photoshop Cs5 . So we need to run CS5 in 32 bit mode. To do this you need to go to Adobes application file.
Step 1.
Or you can follow this link for another method, but I was told the above steps are more common.
