Description
So my friend Wings and I came up with this idea a while back when the Disney genderbend AUs were going around, and it was definitely our favorite. I doodled this up not long ago and really liked how it came out, so it gets to be one of my Inktober inkings!
This is the story of a Beau, a handsome but very bookish young man from a small French village. He doesn’t quite fit in with the macho, hunting-obsessed men so popular in town, and is considered rather odd in general for his fascination with books and learning. His widower mother with her eccentric inventing doesn’t help, but he is content with his solitary life and the fascination of learning. Still, he has managed to gain the attention of many ladies in town for his fine looks, especially Carson (Car-SONE, may change), the most beautiful and desired woman in the town. Carson has ulterior motives for desiring to marry Beau, however; recognizing his intelligence and academic potential, she hopes that he will be her ticket out of this tiny nowhere town with its dumb yokels, and take her into greater social spheres where she can make a name for herself in French society. And she’s not above manipulating his life to get what she wants. Unfortunately, she finds herself constantly frustrated by Beau’s gentlemanly resistance to her looks and charms.
Meanwhile, in the forest hours away is a forgotten castle under a terrible curse: the owner, only heir to a high-born family, was transformed into a hideous beast years ago after she revealed her cruelty and lack of empathy to an enchantress disguised as a poor beggar woman. Beast now lurks in her castle with her transformed servants, hoping and yet despairing of finding true love to break the curse; for who could ever love a beast? When an old woman stumbles into her castle, Beast throws her in the dungeon, showing that her heart is still callous. But when the woman’s son comes and trades his imprisonment for hers, Beast begins to see what a true heart of compassion for others can look like… and the hope of being truly loved is reborn.
I think what I like most about this AU is the interactions we imagined up between Beau and Beast, and how similar and yet different they would be from the movie. For example, I think it would mean even more to Beast when Beau begins to see her as a beautiful person beneath her rough exterior, since we women so often have a deep-seated desire to feel beautiful. (Don’t anybody have a hissy fit, there is nothing wrong with wanting to feel beautiful towards the guy you love! And both Beau and Beast will learn that internal beauty is more important than external.) And Beau, formerly uninterested in romance, finds companionship with and a budding affection for the uncertain, sporadically thoughtful woman hiding beneath the rough and angry exterior of this beast. Of course, then Carson causes problems, but we all know how that goes.
Plus there’s that hilarious scene where BEAST is the one who doesn’t want to come down to dinner, and Beau is waiting impatiently and trying to be a gentleman, and then he makes that unfortunate remark about “fickle women”, and then he gets to run for his life as Beast chases him back to his room and slams on his door fit to break it down before calmly walking away.
