EDIT: I fixed up these old audition pages a little - got rid of that hideous all-black background. I'm going to work on neatening up a few things so stuff looks a little better, since I plan on making this a complete project.
Page one! As I've mentioned in my journal, I'm auditioning for the Artists at the Ready: New Canvas OCT. It's been both fun and hectic trying to get it all done. My audition script is very long, but since I managed to finish this first section (out of 3), I thought I'd go ahead and post it so you guys can tell me if I'm doing good so far. Hope you enjoy. ^^
For those that don't know what's going on: in this OCT, I the artist am supposed to physically 'be there' in the dimension where the OCT is taking place. So, yeah. That's me.
Commentary:
Panel 1: This is partially based on real life, because I DID go to a coffee shop recently to play on my laptop. Gotta love the relaxed atmosphere and free WiFi in coffe shops, even if I do hate coffee.
Panel 2: As noted above, I hate coffee. So that would be a cup of hot chocolate. I will drink hot chocolate in any weather, because it is delicious and not coffee. Starbucks hot chocolate actually tastes really not excellent, though, so I only get it out of necessity (i.e. I want hot chocolate and it's the only kind there).
Panel 3: Clearly, the person in charge of writing my invitation/notice is both very polite and a gameshow host.
Panel 4: That counter curves really weirdly and I dislike it very much, but doggonit, it is a background!
Panel 5: Seriously, would YOU take an email like that seriously? If you would, there is a chance that you have been on the internet far too long, comrade.
A shoutout to my good friend , whom I believe was the first person I mentioned my interest in entering this thing to. ^^
...Oh darnit, I forgot my chair! Will fix this later. >.<
Panel 6-9: I enjoy the challenge of walking while reading and have done it for years, and I've never run into people. Good peripheral vision is a wonderful thing, as I will truly come to appreciate in the next panel. Also, you get 10,000 Awesomeness Points if you actually recognize the book I'm reading and the reference.
Panel 10: If the landscape seems at all boring to you considing the fact that I'm now in The Real, please cut me some slack, because no matter HOW crazy and fantastical something might look up close, you aren't going to be seeing much of the detail from THAT HIGH UP.
Panel 11: I'm sure I'll realize at some point that at least if I had obliviously walked off the edge of my curiously solid cloud, I PROBABLY would have landed on one of the many other curiously solid clouds between me and the ground. Or maybe the dragon would catch me, but that would inspire a whole new level of shock, I'm sure.
Hee. Flying beanie hat.
Panel 12: I'm going to be extremely upset about dropping that book when I quit freaking out. That was a good book. But on the plus side, I never have to draw it ever again!
And that is indeed supposed to be one of Fox's bird plushies. It'll probably show up closer later.
So here I am, in The Real, with a laptop and my purse and NO FREAKING CLUE what's going on and much too upset/confused to appreciate what I'm sure it a really gorgeous airial view of the country. I didn't actually originally plan to take so much stuff with me, but then I set myself in a coffee shop and you don't just LEAVE your laptop at a coffee shop (on purpose), sooo yeah. I seem to be very effectively equipped for this adventure.
I was really pleased with how fast I got this one done, but there's a lot left to do. Thankfully, though, I think this will suffice as an audition if I somehow don't manage to finish the rest. Let me know what you guys think! ^^ Reference sheets will hopefully be up next week.

I. LOVE. Your expression in the last panel. XDDD Man that made my day and the perspective of lookingdown at the ground, you just totally nailed it there. I wouldn't be that brave enough to do a perstive point like that to be honest with you. You got another page coming up? ='D

Excellent! Thanks so much! I was really pleased with how that came out, so I'm glad others approve! Aw man, thanks a lot; I had some trouble with that, it came down to blocking a lot of the scene with clouds/dragon and scribbling in pretty much every large type of landscaping option I could think of. XD I'm glad it came together okay. And I'm hoping to challenge myself in several ways, so that was a good start; I usually HATE doing backgrounds because I'm not always that great with perspective and figuring out where the lines should meet in the distance.
Thankfully, comicing gives the excuse of regularly only drawing the characters in the shot.
You mean you didn't read the copious comments in the text box wherein the possibility of a second page was briefly mentioned? ;D Nah, I kid. Yes, two more pages are coming, one of which is in the process of being digitally assembled! Stay tuned, and thanks for the comments!

You're not alone on the whole theory of prespective drawing either. I can draw backgrounds for beans, but that is an excellect trick you did, using the clouds to cover up most of the area.

Oh yes, I love the Wingfeather Saga. When you started talking about Janner, I thought, Could it be? Then you said "Fork Factory" and I knew it was none other than an Andrew Peterson original. (I will admit I couldn't have told you the title right off the bat, but hey. I'm still pretty awesome.)
I like how you're going with this. I keep thinking that I should do AatR next year--I feel a little left out.

8D YES! Another Wingfeather fan! I am delighted to hear this. ^^ I can't wait to read the third one; it's FINALLY out on sale, but I'm being patient because I currently have an internship at a publishing company and thus already have more books than I know what to do with. XD (And yes! Yes you are. *awards Awesomeness Points, including a bonus cookie because you figured it out WITHOUT even reading the title*)
That would be cool if they did it again next year. I dunno if it'll end up being a yearly thing, but that would be exciting. ^^ Thanks, I'm glad you like the direction! Hopefully it'll keep going in a good way over the next few pages. I should have Page 2 up real soon.

Bummer! I'm okay with waiting for it for now just because I'm doing an internship at a publishing company where you can take all the free books you want off of their Overflow Shelf, so I have more than enough to read right now. XD I'm currently reading the Auralia Thread series by Jeffrey Overstreet. It's AWESOEM, you shoule read it!
If nothing else, you can always draw spectator or fan entries! I know for a fact that they accept those because I asked a judge if I could do them if I don't get in and she said yes. ^^

XD It kind of is. I left the internship last week with three boxes full of books I'd collected over the 10 weeks I was there.
I finally finished the Auralia's Colors series. The ending was a little odd, but I think maybe it is just one of those endings that I will need to read again to appreciate better. I would have liked it a little better if they had more solidly tied up a few particular loose ends, but overall I enjoyed the series.
Go for it! Spectator entries are fun!

That's pretty much the only reason I go to Costa. Sadly I never get to use their free WiFi, because whenever I go to Costa I'm usually never in a situation to sit around for long or if I am, bringing the laptop with me wasn't appropriate to begin with.
I'm really picky about my hot chocolate, it has to have cream on it, and it has to be in a takeaway cup. Always
But I dye cress...
Hope you get through! I'm interested to see what characters you chose. ^^

Hooray, another non-coffee drinker! I can't stand it, it's so bitter. And the only reason I can bring a laptop with me is 'cause my AWESOME bro sold me his laptop mini for $250 (about $200 less than he paid for it), practically new, just 'cause he needed to sell some things and knew I'd appreciate it. It's the perfect size for carrying around and, unlike my OTHER laptop, this one actually has a battery that CHARGES. \o/
I didn't know they even put them in anything besides takeaway cups. XD Maybe we're just not giving certain perks at the coffee shops I frequent.
You mean 'digress', or was that a pun? *amused/confused*
Thanks! Hopefully I'll have at least a few ref sheets and the next page of the entry up in a few days. ^^ I'm having trouble with my third char's ref sheet, he's proving ODDLY stubborn to be drawn...

XD I like the smell, and I've tried it a couple of times but nah. The only coffee I like is coffee chocolates.
Oooooh! That's sweet. Nice guy! XD Eve (My laptop) is getting finicky with the e and space buttons. I was looking around at some laptops the other day and found this GORGEOUS gaming laptop (It glowed red!) Sadly it was £999 and when you consider I'm gonna have a hard time finding the money for a regular priced laptop that one was just a tad out of my range However I think I upset Eve though, since when I started her up this morning she was being very laggy.
Lol, well over here you can have them in a proper cup or glass if you're drinking in, but that's more expensive.
It was a pun XD A joke I carried with me from an old comedy show that used to talk about what had been happening over the past week. If the narrator waffled a bit too much he used to say "But I digress" And a picture of a hand holding a bottle of dye over some watercress was shown. It's a shame I can't remember what that program was called.
Whee! It's always the way.

Yeah, coffee is kinda yucky. I think I finally figured out that I don't like it because I can't stand bitter stuff. This may also be why I can't understand why anyone would like alcohol, 'cause the few drops I've tasted were TERRIBLE.
Yeah, my bros can be pretty cool. ^^ Heheh, yeah, prices are not very helpful in the search for a new laptop, so I'm even more grateful to my bro. I hope Eve is no longer holding a grudge over you eyeing other laptops!
XD That's funny! Oh, and I finished my entry! Took me FOREVER, but it's up! Now to see if I'm in the half of the entrants that actually gets in... (Just learned there are a grand total of 185 entrants. Not TOO daunting, since the final is 64; I figured there would be upwards of 250, so this makes me feel a little better about my chances.)

That would make sense. I don't mind the odd bit of alcohol on special occasions, though when I asked Mum to get some Vodka in for Christmas so I could have some vodka and coke, and she wouldn't let me pour it out myself. I think she was worried I was going to get plastered. But let's face it, I'm 27 and I've never got more than a little merry. I think I can be trusted by now XD
Ya!
Oh she got worse ¬¬ The keyboard's gone stupid. I had to remove the E key in order to get it to work and even then it ranges from having to be pressed really hard to get a single E to producing a string of Es without even being touched (Which is very irritating when you're trying to work in Paint Tool SAI and it won't let you change the tool from an eraser), then I couldn't get a capital D unless I pressed really hard (Which was then followed by a string of Es) and I couldn't get a capital C at all! Thankfully Mum came to the rescue and bought me a nice little USB keyboard. My first time using it today. It's lovely to use.
Whee! Good luck! I need to got clear out my watch inbox so I can see it.

Sadly I didn't get in, but I'm hoping I might be able to do a little side project, at least. We shall see! It would be cool to make myself get some comic practice in. It's SO frustrating sometimes, I feel like I can't get the dialogue to flow right now. >.<

There has only been one time that I was in danger while walking and reading, and I even missed that. Heading to work, I walked past this truck with a beam sticking out the back. I saw it just in time to swerve my head away, but someone saw me and laughed.
However, all this walking and reading does indeed give great peripheral vision, and excellent reflexes!
Haha... oh dear. I see something else we could be doing for your request!

XD One time I was reading while I crossed the street to my workplace, and I KNOW I wasn't in any huge danger, but all my coworkers inside started babbling about how a car almost hit me! And I think I've almsot run into a few objects in the hall at the college, but indeed, it is wonderful to have perophereal vision!
Now THAT could be interesting. I can't wait to see what you draw either way!
So what did you think of the page? Is it a good start? I'd love your honest opinion, you being a fellow auditioner and all.

Haha, other people's reactions are definitely the best part!
I think I run into more stuff when I'm NOT reading than when I am!
Hmmm... I love the expressions, but I did notice that when you get up from your table, the car seems to fit like headphones. Your background is fantastic by the way! And the flying beanie is funny, if not strange. I also noticed the scream seems a little forced. It might just be that your expression doesn't match it. A little more horror/terror in that panel could probably help there. Maybe the mouth wider, or the body language a little more tense. Here's a good recoil reaction in this audition. [link]
Shame you lost your book!

Riverfox237 In reply to Wheatart [2011-05-14 05:31:19 +0000 UTC]
PFFF! XD And yes, people's reactions ARE the best part. I used to do silly stuff just to get looks, like wearing a comb-through-the-head thingie to school. It was hilarious.
Glad the expressions came out well. Yeah, wondered if the car would be weird, but oh well. I stuck the flying beanie in there because it's The Real, and I figure nothing there really makes sense, and I wanted to add SOME sense of less-than-normal strangeness (the dragon is normal strangeness) to the picture because it seemed too plain.
With those final panels, I wasn't actually going for horror/terror so much as absolute shock/confusion/fear. You know how when you're REALLY surprised by something, your jaw goes slack and you in general become sort of limp? That's more what I was going for (and why I dropped my book *sob*). The scream came after the super-long ellipses to sort of signal me rising out of shock and into ACTUAL terror.
Hopefully that explains it. If not, and I still failed, darnit. But at least I still like the facial expression on second-to-last panel. ^^ This is meant to stretch me, so I shall keep these things in mind!
I know! It's terrible! It was such a good book, and I paid possibly three whole bucks for it! In-comic me will be really sad when she stops being so concerned about not falling to her death.
