*gasp* Holy smoke! Riverfox237 did a meme! It’s a January miracle!

So I have always wanted to do a meme, and I actually started this one in, like, 2009 (I have NO IDEA how you people do these all the time, they are so complicated!). But I finally hammered out the final details the other night after reaching my peak annoyance at seeing the seven pages of it sitting by my desk.

And now, not only have I finished a meme, but I can FINALLY introduce to the world my long-time characters, Flem and the Spoon of Doom!

For reference, Flem Rainster is the noseless, porcupine-haired alien hero of a spoofy adventure space comic I dream of actually starting someday, called the Spoon of Doom. It is named such because Flem has been partnered with the Spoon of Doom, an A.I. shapeshifting robot that looks like a spoon. They go on missions through space and fight intergalactic evil, and then come back to the office and fight everyday kinds of evil. Flem is a good guy, but tends to be chronically cranky when I draw him, probably because I almost always draw him right after the Spoon has done something frustrating. He wasn’t partnered with the Spoon by his own choice, obviously, but that doesn’t mean he’s gonna lay down on the job!

And now, a blow-by-blow!

1. FIRE – I like to be unorthodox. XD And Flem is quite a talented cook. This just isn’t a good example of his mad cooking skillz.
2. TRAPPED UNDERWATER – just in case it isn’t totally clear, the Spoon of Doom has shape-shifted into a rotary saw for the straps holding Flem, a breathing tube, claws to scare away the piranha, and a little propeller motor. Generic evil guy silhouette in the background, because it’s fun. Seriously, try it sometime.
3. ZOMBIE OUTBREAK – inspired by a pic I once drew of Flem fighting The Spoon while under the control of an evil spreading nanobot virus. Kinda like the Borg, I guess. Let me know if you don’t get the joke I was going for here.
4. FALLING – they have these sorts of conversations a lot. (Not to say that they fail many missions; they just argue a lot.) Flem calls the Spoon S.D. for short.
a. A Note: the Spoon of Doom can only communicate with Flem, thanks to a microchip on Flem’s head. So to the reader, the Spoon’s speech always appears as either “…”, “???”, or, in this case, “!!!”
5. FIGHT TO THE DEATH – I didn’t really want someone to have to die, and this seemed funnier.
6. CAR CHASE – This was the LAST ONE DONE because I could NOT decide what to draw!!! ‘Cause it’s an ALIEN comic, and they don’t HAVE cars, and I can’t draw cars anyway! But after agonizing about it until almost everything else was done, I at last realized this golden truth. And now I’m really quite happy with it. Space speeders are fun to draw.
7. ABDUCTED BY ALIENS – I enjoyed this one. ‘Cause he IS an alien, see. And there are no humans in the Spoon of Doom comic, so naturally…yes. You get the picture.
8. TRAPPED IN A VIDEO GAME – by far my favorite panel. I love Flem’s outfit. And the ‘pokemon’ is Flem’s pet furry slug, Gifreid, with antennae and butterfly wings. I was gonna copy Butterfree’s wings and Ash’s outfit but was too lazy to look up a reference picture. And pokemon always say their names, so Gif is saying his, because saying “furred slug” just isn’t as cute.
9. QUICKSAND – I did say I like to be unorthodox. XD
10. WRITTEN INTO A BAD FANFIC – this one was really fun. I love Flem’s obvious horror, and it was fun creating a rambling speech for his Mary-Sue twin.
11. PERIL OF YOUR CHOICE – there is a girl named Ophelia who is of a purple squid-like race, and she has a major crush on Flem and sorta kinda stalks him. This makes Flem incredibly uncomfortable because a) he is terrible with girls and doesn’t know how to make her go away and b) he thinks inter-species dating is weird. So…yeah, this counts as a Peril in his book. (I didn’t intend to have two rambling females back-to-back in this meme. Perhaps it is a subconscious sign that Flem also fears hyperactive, talkative women.)
12. AND NOW FOR A BANDAID TO MAKE IT ALL BETTER – I know, I’m a stinker. XD (And just for my peace of mind, Flem was going to say “What the heck?!”)

More Fun Facts!

What was really fun about this meme is that I managed to include all the main characters from the comic.
- The guy in ZOMBIE OUTBREAK with Flem is Flem’s best friend, Rhemie, who is a flirt and has a surfer accent and whose job in the comic hasn’t been fully figured out yet.
- We discussed Ophelia, who by the way has two extra arm-like tentacles growing out of her back, and is a scientist. She may or may not have been involved in the project that created the Spoon of Doom.
- Gif the furred slug is the most adorable furry slug in the world and I wuv him, and he was the inspiration for the giant furry slug racing mount from my audition for the IDD OCT in 2009.
- And you want to know the REALLY hilarious bit? See the blacked-out guy in panel 2? Well, he was originally a generic villain. But this last year, I finally nailed down the appearance of the comic’s main villain, Lubrofenplot the Mortifying, and he seriously looks like that. As in he is bald and has pointy ears. So it’s really hilarious and weird that I may have managed to include him in the meme before he was even created. XD *cue spooky music*

So now you all know my beloved Spoon of Doom characters, and I can stop feeling dumb for never posting anything about the character I use as my own stinkin’ usericon! Oh, and my apologies that the text is crappy. It looked neater when I first inked it, but I used a .005 pen, which is great for fine lines but does NOT show up well as text, and I tried to go over the words again. So it looks a little crummy. Oh well.
