Description
And you say that the battle is overAnd you say that the war is all done
Go tell it to those with the wind in their nose
Who run from the sound of the gun
And write it on the sides of the great whaling ships
Or on ice floes, where conscience is tossed
With the wild in their eyes, it is they who must die
And it's we who must measure the loss
"You Say the Battle is Over" - John Denver
I stumbled across a website about extinct animals last week, and it really struck me for some reason. Some of my favourite animals are ones that I've always known have been gone (like Thylacines). But I found that one, the Chinese River Dolphin (or Baiji) was just recently declared functionally extinct. I first heard of the Baiji in a documentary when I was about seven, and I always liked them. I had no idea that they were even that rare.
If you look into most of the 'large animal' extinctions in the last few centuries, most (but not all) have been a direct result of human actions. I'm not saying 'oh, the people cut down a few trees and that caused the birds to go extinct'; more like 'the people killed all the birds'. And the worst part is that a lot of the time people don't seem to have even realised what they were doing until it was too late to repair the damage.
There used literally billions of Passenger Pigeons in North America, so many that people thought they could never possibly be rare. They were hunted to extinction within a few hundred years. And the story repeats with many other species. People didn't even realise that the Quagga wasn't just a funny-coloured Zebra until it was long gone. Nowadays people have a better idea of what they're doing, but still don't really seem to grasp the full extent of their actions.
These thoughts wouldn't leave me alone until I did a painting based on them. If at least a few people 'get' what the picture means, it'll have been worth all the work I put into it.
From right, on the carousel:
Elephant Bird, extinct by the 1640s
Dodo, extinct by 1680
Quagga, extinct by the 1880s
Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger), extinct in 1936
Baiji, believed extinct in 2006
On the ground, a Leopard, a Polar Bear, and a Rhino, all endangered but still hanging on.

"In my humble opinion the piece coupled with the message is worthy of a DD."
Unfortunately, mods don't agree. I suggested it a while back and nothing has come forth

This is an interesting and eerie way to depict a sad subject, well done!
And yeah, we've lost a lot. The Scottish wildcat numbers also went too low, and while it's similar enough to the wildcat populations in other parts of Europe, so conservation attempts are continuing, it's... Sad. In the UK we also used to have lynxes, bears, wolves, and boars (the latter already being reintroduced). You can almost forgive early stupidity, when humanity had trouble seeing other animals as more than just threats, but so many animals are still going extinct despite efforts! They're slipping through our fingers.

I love it! It's so sad that this is happening...my favorite creature that is extinct is the Tasmanian Tiger. They were pretty awesome creatures and they may be hanging in there still(they're just not officially announced to not be extinct; no pure evidence, just supposed sightings) I love the message behind this picture though...it's so true...😥

Wow. I really don't know what to say to this. I love the artistic value, and the message is powerful, as well as one I agree with. Good job.

The message was so clear when I first saw this. Even before I looked at the details and description I immediately knew that these animals were endangered. Those people should be the ones with the poles inside of them!

this is amazing. The message is so clear and I love how to people have masks on showing they are blind to what they are doing. It's horrible to think so many species are gone because of us...

Carousel of the Foolishly Squandered.
Wow..this is totally amazing. The symbolism is great, and gets the message across loud and clear. Now if people in power would just take off those blindfolds and actually SEE it...before they add even more animals to it
...And small animals are not immune. Honeybees and now even Monarch butterflies are in trouble, because of money-grubbing big pesticide business. And then what becomes of the birds that eat these insects...maybe "Silent Spring" will actually come to pass...
...Sorry...I got a bit ranty at the end there.

I hate the way that we can't even trust our own species to look after our planet. It's stupid, the way we kill innocent, already-rare Animals just for the sake of money. As a Tiger lover, I tell many people that we have already killed-off 3 of the Tiger species. This includes: the Caspian Tiger, the Bali Tiger, and the Javan Tiger. Now, they are extinct forever. They will never return to this planet again. The 4 remaining Tiger species are Siberan, Bengal, Sumatran, and the South-Chinese. Hopefully, they will thrive, and won't be extinct by the time I am 18. SAVE THE TIGERS.

Interesting idea to use the carousel; most carousels that have non-horses on them that I've encountered where at zoos and being used to promote understanding about Earth's creatures and our connection to them. I've never associated carousels with negative actions before, so I find your choice very surprising.
Of course the carousel has been used before as a symbol for time, childhood/childish, and dreams. So one could interpit its presence here as a symbol of humankind's childish ignorance, the fact that we can't reverse time no matter how much we wish to, and/or that we can only see these lost creatures in our dreams.
Wonderful pic; very thought-provokeing.

The meaning of this is so sad, especially the man and the polar bear.
It's like the bear is the closest one to be extinct.
I could watch this for hours, this is beautiful but it makes me sad and angry at the same time.
Great work

I'm favoriting this on so many levels:
One, because it shows a quagga. Quaggas have fascinated me ever since I first heard of them at around age 10 or so (I'm now much, much older). Two, because it shows a carousel, and I've been nuts about carousels since before I can even remember (practically every picture of me as a child has me either on or nearby a carousel somewhere, and three...because you even quoted a John Denver song! I've been a JD fan since I was 11 or 12, (been to several of his concerts too!) and even got my mother to become a fan as well.
Bravo!

You're welcome!
After careful study of the picture, here's my take on it:
the animals are all either extinct or endangered, and all the people are blindfolded. The people are all busy preparing the various animals to go onto the carousel. So I see it as taxidermy specimens- perhaps all that remains of some of the poor creatures- and the humans are blindly using them for the mere amusement of others, not caring or even considering them important enough to save alive.
