Description
I am really struggling with hair.I have downloaded many tutorials but most I have found to be incomplete in really going step by step through the process.
So far the tutorials I have downloaded and tried are:
Basic Hair Painting Tutorial by: *nureen
CGTalk: Tutorial: Painting Hair
Cosmos Hair Tutorial Part 1 by =cosmosue
To Make Hair by: =Eireen
How to Create hair in Photoshop: Using Brushes by =aragwen
I learned little bits from each Tut, but I just can't seem to get it all together and to me there are many important steps missing from these tutorials.
What I did to try to paint the hair in the manip. I am working on was create a custom brush using the technique I found in the An exercise in painting hair using Photoshop by Will Kramer
Then I smudged the hair out with that brush.
It looks like a big fake feathery mess!
What I really wanted to do was make the hair silkier, longer and have it look like it is blowing in the wind.
Would anyone be interested in helping me out with the hair on this peice so I can learn?
If anyone knows of more hair tutorials that are detailed, please do leave links!
Thanks

yeah, hair's kinda tuff at first. I'm gonna guess and say that you're smudging too much at once, try using a smaller brush. I always use one of the photoshop preset brushes, it looks like a group of 1 pixel dots (there are several different sizes), and then just sort of pretend to brush her hair the way you want it to go, (photoshop brushes always seem to be set to space for some reason, so make sure you slide spacing all the way to the minimum) and you can dodge and burn highlights in, and then add the stray strands on another layer after. I suck at explainging stuff, hope this helps a bit.

Ok well it is at least good to know it takes a lot more practice.
I did try to use one of the presets but it really messed the hair up. So I made my own dot clump of 5 dots and ran a Gaussian blurr filter over it and then made a brush. It was pretty small. Maybe I should make a 2 dot brush and try that.
I will try to slide the spacing down tho. I think that may be what messed me up on my attempt with the PS brushes! Thanks for those tips!
You really helped me! I appreciate it!

ok, I hope you don't mind, I downloaded this pic this morning, to see how I would do it. I selected all the hair and copied it to a new layer, then I used the preset brush, that is called "spatter 24 pixels" (spacing set to 1%, strength at anywhere between 86 and 90 % and made long flowing strokes (until they faded), working outward from her face. then used the dodge tool, same brush, set on highlights at around 54% to add some highlights.
I just did it quickly as a test, spent maybe 3 minutes on it, I'll save it for a bit incase you want to see how I did it, and if not I'll delete it.

You see what you did here in this deviation of yours:

I am really trying to get there. I see you did a lot of burning and dodging. That seems to be a key element in getting the light correct.

yeah, that's lots of layers also, you know, I think when I learned to paint hair, I skipped the picture of the person, and practiced making the strokes, and the highlighting, for a while. Then started with a bald head and adding hair... and well, I don't do manips so I haven't used already existing hair and tried changing it, until today. (it's in my scraps now, btw)

That's a good idea. Most of the Tuts. teach that way with just a clump for practice. I was wondering how to actually apply it tho. Maybe I should get ahead of my skillset so fast! Start from the first rung! LOL

I would love to see it. Did you post it in your scraps? Or do you want to email it to me? I'd love to see what you did.
Thank you so much for doing that.

I got it.
Wow, that is definitly the track I need to get on. So you pulled the hair down with the smudge tool with the settings as specified above and then dodged and highlighted?
I think those brush settings are crucial for sure.
I REALLY appreciate you doing that. It is great for me to have a visual guide along with your explanation.

yup, and like I said, that was just 2 or 3 minutes, just to get an idea, you can add way more detail and layers and use smaller brushes, but for me, it's easiest to get the basic shape I want first and go from there. I started out with the same hair painting tutorial that you had mentioned using, but I've eliminated most of the extra steps and custom brushes, and color palet, cause it just seems to be extra work to me

OK, I will keep all that in mind. It is a bit of information overload at the moment with all the different Tutorials I have attempted! I guess I just have to learn the basic principles and go from there.

I know what you mean about the tutorial overload LOL, my first attempt at hair is the ID on my page, it's a mess. Trying to apply all these techniques and brushes that I wasn't comfortable with, and I didn't know about the stupid spacing either. So yeah, I'd say get comfortable with just a swatch of color, making it flow like hair and then adding the highlights. The more you do it, the easier it gets.

Wow! That spacing tip is really awesome. I am working on another attempt now.
One question tho: Did you have "sample all layers" checked?
What I am finding as I am pulling down with the smudge tool is that it is grabbing the skin etc and pulling that down.
I have "sample all layers" checked.
I also selected the hair and put it on a new layer before I did all this.

nope, make sure "use all layers"and/or "sample all layers" and "finger painting" are all unchecked
